A SOLDIER who lost his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan will take part in a welcome home parade in Bicester.

Private Josh Campbell, 23, will join fellow troops from 23 Pioneer Regiment as they march through Sheep Street on Saturday.

And the Oxford Mail is urging people to turn out at 2pm to show the regiment their support.

The parade will start at 2.30pm from the north end of Sheep Street. About 300 soldiers will be presented with service medals for tours in Afghanistan, Operation Tosca in Cyprus, or Operation Telic in Iraq, at a ceremony at St David’s Barracks, Bicester.

They will then be bussed into Bicester before taking to the streets of the town to celebrate their return after a six-month tour.

Pte Campbell was injured in an explosion last September and is currently being treated at the defence medical rehabilitation centre at Hedley Court, Surrey.

He will be in a wheelchair for the parade and wear his uniform.

Lt Col Simon Wheelton, the regiment’s commanding officer, said: “It has been an immensely busy and testing time for the regiment and our families, but I am extremely proud to report that in all three theatres of operations we have succeeded and added real value.

“Fortunately, every member of the regiment returned from operations although, sadly, Pte Josh Campbell suffered horrific leg injuries resulting in double amputation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as he begins his rehabilitation. We feel privileged and honoured to be welcomed home by the Bicester community.

“We are extremely proud to serve our country and the local community, and want to thank the public of Bicester for their continued support.”

Bicester mayor James Porter said: “For me, it is an honour and privilege to be part of the welcome home parade for our troops.”
