MEDICS from RAF Lyneham, who evacuate wounded soldiers from the Afghan battlefields have been shortlisted for the Millies.
The Medical Emergency Response Teams, who only recently won a national ambulance service award, are among three nominees for the lifesaver category at the military awards ceremony in the Imperial War Museum next month.
Doctors, emergency nurses, paramedics and medical assistants are taken out in helicopters to bring the wounded in to the main hospital at Camp Bastion.
They face temperatures ranging from sub-zero to searing heat and the constant risk of enemy fire, IEDs and rocket-propelled grenades to collect the casualties.
AN RAF spokesman said: "The MERT has also dealt with multiple major incidents where the practitioners’ exceptional skill undoubtedly saved many lives of, not only our coalition troops, but also Afghan civilians and children.
"This mentally and physically exhausting work is performed with the utmost dedication and professionalism by the troops."
The Millies are being held on 15 December with a broadcast by ITV following on December 21.
