STAFF at the Early Learning Centre in Weymouth have thrown their weight behind the Dorset Echo’s Christmas Toy Appeal.

The shop, in St Mary Street, is taking part for the sixth time.

Store manager Jon Diment was more than keen to get a bin out again this year.

He said: “I think this is just a fantastic cause and there are not many charities like this in the local area.

“We do ask customers to take advantage of the buy-one-get-one free offers we have in store and most customers are happy to donate their free item to the appeal.

“If you can afford to donate then please do, because it is such a wonderful thing to support because it is for local children in the area.

“I always put in £10 worth of toys myself and I just think it is worth it to make someone else’s Christmas that little bit more special.”

This year’s toy appeal is well under way, with more than 20 stores already involved. It is the 10th anniversary of the appeal’s launch.

Mr Diment has placed his bin next to the shop entrance to encourage customers to donate but he says this year has had a slow start.

He said: “Some years it has just been fantastic, but this year has been a little bit slower and maybe that’s to do with the recession.

“I do hope it picks up because no matter how big or small the donation, everything makes a difference.”
