Bonfire Night set to go with a bang

THE fuse has been lit as preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations throughout Oxfordshire get under way.

The biggest display is likely to be Oxford Round Table’s charity event in the city’s South Park, which will feature a 26ft burning wooden ice princess, £11,000 of fireworks, entertainers, fairground rides and a crowd expected to reach about 18,000.

Jason Priest, one of the many volunteers, said: “We’re now in our 42nd year. As soon as the last firework goes up we start planning the next event – it’s a year-round thing for us.

“We’ve got so much going on this year, we really should be able to attract 18,000 people which will really help the charities we support. Pre-sale tickets are very important to us and they help people to come in on time. Log on to on oxfordfireworks.co.uk”

Gates open at 5pm for a 6.30pm start. Tickets cost £5 each or £15 for a family (two adults and two children).

Other events in the county include:

Steeple Aston: Fir Lane sports field, on Thursday, November 5. Gates open at 6.15pm for a 7pm start. Tickets, including food and drink, are £5 in advance or £6 on the gate. Family tickets are priced £14 in advance and £16 on the night. Call Richard on 01869 340512 or Barbara on 01869 340423.

Launton: Launton Primary School, Saturday, November 7. Gates open at 5pm and the display starts at 6.30pm. Food and refreshments will be available. Tickets, costing £10 for a family, are on sale at Launton Shop and Post Office.

Nettlebed: Sue Ryder fireworks and Halloween night in the grounds of the care home on Saturday, October 31. Gates open at 5.30pm and the event includes £4,000 of fireworks, stalls, a pig roast and bar. For more information, log on to henleybridge-rotary.org.uk

Great Milton: Fireworks and music at the village recreation ground on Friday, November 6. Gates open at 7pm for an 8pm start. Attractions include food, mulled wine and beer, plus children’s activities. Entrance by donation on the gate.

Long Hanborough: Musical fireworks at Pinsley Road Playing Fields on Friday, November 6. Gates open at 6pm for a 7pm start. Attractions include a fairground, food and refreshments. Up to 4,000 spectators are expected. Entry costs £3 for adults and £2 for children.

Standlake: Big Bang Firework and Bonfire meeting at Standlake Arena on Sunday, November 1. Two banger demolition derbies followed by a giant bonfire in the middle of the track and fireworks. First race at noon. For more information log on to standlakearena.co.uk

Fringford: Fringford Green on Thursday, November 5. Bonfire and fireworks from 5.30pm. Entry by donation.

Witney: Curbridge Social Club fireworks at Witney United FC, in Downs Road, on Saturday, October 31. Gates open at 5.30pm with a Guy competition at 6.45pm, bonfire at 7pm and fireworks at 7.30pm.
