Hundreds queue up for a bargain as 99p Store opens

MORE than 300 people queued outside a new discount store in Cowley to pick up the best 99p bargains – including a 17-piece tea set.

The recession-busting 99p Stores chain opened a new branch today at Templars Square shopping centre in the former Woolworths unit, which has been empty since last Christmas.

Shoppers queued up outside the store before decorator Ian West, 53, cut the tape for the opening ceremony at 9am.

The father-of-one from Wood Farm Road was given a £5 voucher to spend and won an Apple iPod in a competition. Mr West said: “I’ve used the voucher to buy some toys for my grandchildren and some sweets for my daughter.

“I won the competition by recognising theme tunes from 1980s TV shows like Crossroads.

“You can get amazing value for money in this shop so I’m going to go round again to see what else I can find.

“I think this shop can only be a good thing for Templars Square shopping centre.”

There were 20 staff working at the Woolworths store, and there will be 30 full and part-time staff working at the 99p Stores shop.

Nadir Lelani, chief executive of the chain, said: “We started up in 2001 and now there are 108 stores across the country with an annual turnover of £250m a year.

“We sell household goods, gardening and beauty products, sweets and stationery. Everyone loves a bargain. That’s why we’re successful.”

Area manager Sushil Purushothaman added: “When there is a downturn, people look for a bargain and getting good value for known brands has always been the boss’s motto.”

The Cowley shop is the 99p Stores’ 42nd outlet to open this year and it is the 37th former Woolworths store to be taken over by the chain.

The Cowley store stocks 4,000 different items costing 99p or less. The chain also opened a shop in Witney in May, employing 30 staff.

Hundreds queued outside German discount store Aldi last month when it opened in Botley Road in Oxford.

Its worth remembering that a lot of what they sell for 99p is on offer elsewhere for less. Going into a 99p shop puts you in the 'it must be cheaper' frame of mind when in fact it aint..

Rubbish. You clearly didn't read the article as it stated that a 17 piece tea set was available for 99p. On looking at the website, four cans of Pepsi, Colgate Toothpaste, Johnson and Johnson Baby Lotion and Nivea Body Lotion are all available at 99p each. These prices are simply not available elsewhere and your response smacks of snobbery.

It's not snobbery I will happily shop there but I am saying that not all 99p deals are as good as they sound. The 17 peice tea set was a one day opening special to the first x amount of customers. Four cans of coke are avaliable for the same price at Lidl as is colgate toothpaste. I expect there are bargains to be had for 99p but not eveything in the shop is the cheapest you will find that was what I was saying.

Sounds like downmarket cr*p to me, which will pull down the image of Templars Square yet further. Any shopping centre is desperate to get an 'upmarket' major store to act as the cornerstone of the development and attract better stores which in turn attract higher spending customers. This was the case with Selfridges, Lewis's then Alders in the Westgate before Primark took over.
Fair enough any jobs in a recession are better than none, but a pig in lipstick is still a pig, and Oxford is increasingly given over to poor quality. low end shops selling rubbish. If you're on a tight budget, you can probably do without sugary fizzy drinks rather than queueing up to buy them at a discount.

Mr Skipp. I don't know if you have had a wander round large parts of Oxford recently, but if you do, you will find that whole areas are now poor quality, low end, and stinking of rubbish, so maybe this shop has opened at just the right time, even North Oxford has not missed out, what with them getting a Tesco.

It looks like someone's been doing their research. Perhaps it's time to switch off the computer and go outside for some fresh air, Mr Windsor. It certainly beats arguing over the price of Colgate toothpaste. And it really is a lovely day out there.

Virtually every article on this website results in an argument. Frankly I would be glad if the OM announced it was scrapping the comments option.

Security words: will-rain. Maybe your comments about the "fresh air" were a little optimistic.

I don't suppose it occurred to anyone that 30 jobs have also been created as a result of this shop. It doesn't matter what shops Oxford has, if we get new ones it will mean new jobs and a source of income for those who want to work. Surely this is better than having empty units left, right and centre.

And I suppose the Summertown Somerfield was better than Tesco, whopper? I think not...

End of the day...if you dont like it...dont shop there! Good to see a new business up and running and dragging it's new staff out of the recession. So what if it's cheap rubbish......it's all some people can afford. oh, and the smug comment about Primark taking over the shopping mall...trust me, that's an excellent store, wander past the one in Reading and you'll know what a really cheap crap shop looks like!

Stop your bloody arguing. 99p is 99p, there is a lot of tat in these shops but they also do foods and drinks, which i think you will find are problably the same price as the bigger stores own brands!!! Shop where you think is more cost effective.

Mr Tribal Geezer, Why would you want the comments section shut down? This is the place where you really find out what people are thinking, and of course we will argue, if you don't like it you can always go to a westlife fansite, they always agree on there!!. P.S. Sorry about cutting down all the trees in your rain forest, but the new 99p store needed some wood for their shelving.
