CHILDREN’S character Fireman Sam came to life when real firefighters visited a Bicester nursery.
One fire engine and a rescue tender with a boat rolled into Outset Nursery, off Keble Road, where children have been learning about transport of all shapes and sizes, including planes, trains and boats.
Firefighters were invited to the nursery to tell youngsters about their job and how they rescue people. Children got to try hosepipes, courtesy of firefighter Tim Northcott, wear yellow hats and climb inside the fire engine and the brigade’s inflatable rescue boat.
Nursery manager Emma Bradd said: “It’s fantastic for our children to get this visit and we’re very grateful to the fire service for finding the time to come and see us.
“Along with learning about a different form of transport the children have also gained respect for the role of firefighters and the important work they do.”
Darran Hookway, watch manager at Kidlington Fire Station where the rescue boat is based, said: “It’s great to see the children taking an active interest at such an early age.
“Everyone’s really pleased to be here to share our work – and especially our fire engines – with them.
“Education is just as important as fighting fires and saving lives, and we hope these youngsters will benefit from learning more about us and the fire service today.”
