School wants help to build great gates

SCHOOLCHILDREN are looking for donations to help them build their dream gates in memory of a community stalwart.

Pupils from Hagbourne School, near Didcot, have designed the new gateway to mark Monica Lawson’s valued contribution to the life of the school. Mrs Lawson, who was chairman of East Hagbourne Parish Council, died suddenly on Boxing Day. She was a school governor and contributed to many aspects of village life, including Britain in Bloom and the community shop.

Headteacher Richard Jones said: “The children have worked hard on their designs and we appointed a local artist to combine some of their ideas into the final version. It looks spectacular.

“There are children of different sizes to represent their growth at school, a tree to represent how children grow and branch out with their talents and interests, and examples of birds, animals, leaves, flowers and insects to reflect our place as one of Britain’s top sustainable schools. There is also a depiction of the earth surrounded by children to reflect our treasured ties with schools around the world, and two chickens to remember one of Monica’s favourite pastimes.”

A firm in Witney has been picked to construct the £4,000 gates and children will visit the workshop to see them being made.

Anyone who can make a donation should call the school office on 01235 813367 or send cheques payable to Hagbourne School, marking the envelope Gates Fund.
