SWINE FLU: Will you be a priority for the jab?

HEALTH officials in Oxfordshire last night released a possible list of priority groups for swine flu vaccines. A vaccination is expected to be ready late in August or early September, but it has yet to be decided how people in the county will get it.

Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust last night stressed the priority list was only suggestions which the Department of Health would confirm.

The order is:

* Individuals at particular risk, including those with serious heart, kidney, liver or lung disease, long-term health problems like diabetes, or weakened immune systems from chemotherapy or HIV/Aids)

* Mums-to-be in second and third trimester

* Health and social care workers directly involved in patient care

* Other health and social care workers * Children aged three years to 16 years

* People aged 65 and over

* Poultry workers

* The rest of the population.

Poultry workers? Why? I thought swine flu was completely different from bird flu.

The OM reported a few weeks back, that the University were looking for volunteers for vaccine trials. But then provided no information as to how to put yourself forward.....

As someone with a pretty lousy immune system, i was quite interested.

Yes swine flu is different to bird flu in as much as the genetics is different but ALL flu rotates between humans, pigs and poultry. The danger is if someone gives it to poultry another more deadly strain could then mutate out.

A combination of the pathogenicity of this swine derived flu combined with the deadly nature of the H5N1 bird flu is not a nice thought. The bird flu is more dangerous due to the fact it infects a different part of the respiratory system.

Here's a bit more information, Peat, about taking part in the trials for a vaccine that will combat both swine and avian flu:

I would ring the Nuffield Department of Clincial Medicine.

We need an URGENT REVIEW of this policy with regard to UNDER THREES. Toddlers and babies are VERY SUSCEPTIBLE to this illness and have the second highest rate of hospitalisations after the 18-64 age group!! Young children are NOT EXPENDABLE and cannot be expected to remain at home as the latest government advice heralds. This is a CRUEL and UNREALISTIC policy (and completely unviable for BOTH working and stay at home mums and tots). Why should under threes have less priority than the very aged when they have all their lives ahead of them?
Are they only worth a half or a third of another human being?
Comments from other mums appreciated!

I have an 11 month old daughter and a 5 year old. There is an 'unconfirmed' case of Swine flu in my daughters nursery. Therefore I am very concerned about her well being. I feel that it is very important that all under 3's are treated as a priority. Any young child should be. Their immune sytems are just not strong enough to cope. They should not be treated as second class citizens just because there voice is not yet loud enough to be heard.

Lets, let all the adults die and then see how the under 3s cope then. Hope you taught them to use the microwave
