FANS and players United to show their support at Oxford’s annual open day.

About 2,000 United supporters, many wearing the team’s new Nike kit, posed with their heroes in the North Stand for a unique team photograph on Saturday.

It was part of the free event at the Kassam Stadium which attracted about 4,000 people in total.

They were able to meet manager Chris Wilder’s squad – which includes eight new faces for next season – and get their autographs as well as buy the new style of home shirt for the first time.

Fans also took part in penalty competitions, enjoyed the Oxford Mail bouncy castle and donated money for the 12th Man campaign. The shirt number has been retired and money raised in the campaign will go into the Wilder’s transfer kitty.

Commercial manager David Jackson said: “It has been very successful.

“The big photo went down well and everywhere you looked there were people wearing the new home shirt.

“I don’t exactly how many have been sold, but the staff in the club shop were very busy with pre-orders.

“I think some of the new players, and even some of the existing ones, have been taken aback by the level of interest from fans and the number of people who support the club.”

Shop manager Hilary Sillman said: “It’s been absolutely manic. We had well over 100 pre-ordered shirts to be collected and we sold hundreds more on the day.”

Lewis Bain, 11, from Didcot, said: “I really enjoyed it. My favourite bit was taking the penalties – and I scored two.”

A raffle for a fan to win a place in the official team photo raised about £1,000.

Club chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “I think it was great. People came out in numbers again.

“I thought the players did well. They had a bit of fun and enjoyed it, and the kids had a great time. It was just a good atmosphere.”
