M&S assistant attacked by Rottweiler on the Leys

POLICE are investigating two dog attacks which happened just hours and streets apart in Greater Leys, Oxford — the latest in a string of incidents this year.

One of the victims said she had been left in agony after being attacked by a Rottweiler in a quiet neighbourhood street.

Just 24 hours later, a man was taken to hospital and required surgery after he was bitten on the hand by what police said was either a Staffordshire bull terrier or a pit bull terrier.

On Sunday afternoon, shop assistant Wendy Parker, 56, of Verbena Way, Greater Leys, was set upon by the dog in Primrose Place.

She said: “It just went for me and bit me on my left hip. It was terrifying.

“I have two big puncture wounds in my hip and a lot of teeth marks.

“It’s very painful and I have to go to the doctor every day to have my dressing changed — I can hardly sit down.”

After she was bitten, Mrs Parker, who works at Marks & Spencer in Cowley, was given a tetanus injection and put on a course of antibiotics.

Her husband Russel, 46, a porter at Pembroke College, was with his wife when she was attacked at about 3.30pm.

He said: “As we were walking through Primrose Close we saw a blue car with its boot open and a Rottweiler in the back.

“We thought nothing of it and carried on walking, but the dog suddenly jumped out and was right by us within seconds.

“I shouted to my wife to stand still, but she instinctively turned her back on the dog — it leapt forward and bit her hip.

“My wife was frozen with fear. I had to drag her up the road to get her away from the threat. It was then I noticed she was bleeding.

“People came into the street to see what the commotion was about and I called for an ambulance. When I was on the phone, the owner of the dog came out of his house and said I didn’t need to call for an ambulance or the police.

“When I told him to go away, he threatened to punch me — he was extremely aggressive.”

Mr Parker added: “There was a lot of children in the area and the height of the bite mark could easily have been a child’s head.

“I don’t blame the dog, I blame the owner.

“I don’t want to see the dog put down, but it can’t be allowed to do this to people.”

Police spokesman Vicky Brandon said officers had visited the victim to take a statement and had traced the owner of the Rottweiler. No arrests have yet been made.

Meanwhile, a man needed surgery at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital on Monday night after being bitten on the hand by either a Staffordshire bull terrier or a pit bull terrier. Police said he was attacked by two dogs as he walked his dog in woods off Grenoble Road at about 7pm.

The owner of the dogs tried to assist the injured man, but left the scene without leaving his name or details.

That was one very brave dog!

And you're an expert at judging people by how they look!
It's irresponsible owners that make me angry as I have a Doberman and so many people shy away from him, it's not neccesary as he's a big baby! He's been snarled at mainly by terriers and a couple of GSD's. It's not the dog though, it's how the owners treat their 'pet' and get their dogs to behave.

Reading the report of the dogs attacking persons, how on earth can the Police admit that it MAY be a PIT BULL terrier, the act says TYPE, and the dog should NOT be in this country unless it has been reg. and in any case it should be muzzled, if the Police suspect that it is a Pit Bull why are they not getting this dog seized NOW, not wait for another person to be attacked, or a child killed, the Dangerous Dogs Act needs to be read again by those who have the power to enforce this act.....not sit and quote it MAY BE !!!The same goes for the Rottweiler, the owner could not have had the dog under proper control, so the Police, and the dog wardens MUST start going about to stop these acts of attacking, READ THE DANGEROUS DOGS ACT, and for everyones sake APPLY IT.AND DO NOT FORGET THE ACT SAYS 'TYPE'.

Having read this story again, the owner of the Rotti is known, and there is witness statements to be had, so why isn't the Police spokesman telling us that the incident is being reported UNDER THE DANGEROUS DOGS ACT, where this act gives far greater powers to the courts, or are they waiting for a child to be injured or killed by dogs that have iresponsible owners, the owner of this dog it is reported issued a threat to the injured party, OK now let the law deal with the incident NOW...

How about banning dogs (except registered assistance dogs) in all Social Housing & Shared Ownership properties?

Exuse me Andrew:Oxford but why shouldn't people in Shared Ownership houses be permitted to own a dog? We are mortgage and rent paying citizens and are doing our best to get onto the property ladder. This has nothing to do with how responsible we are with pets! I'm really annoyed that you felt the need to be so judgemental, are you just a total snob??

I think we need to take all the silly talk about where anyone lives, it does not matter where you live, in a tent, in any house or for that matter a palace, it is down to responsible dog(s) ownership, there are a number owned for a purpose, to protect certain items, there are some that are owned as family pets, and those owned as a macho image'look at my dog' with it's thick studded collar, either running loose, or pulling on a lead, or sitting in a car.
Been there seen them all.
I feel so uptight at the sight of so many PIT BULL TYPE dogs that are out on our streets without anything being done to control these dogs, once a child is badly attacked god for bid, the local dog wardens, and Police authority need only look in the mirror to see who is to blame. History shows that once there is a dreadful attack the Police, and Dog Wardens start to seize dogs that have no right on our streets at all, better to prevent it ever letting it happen.
Did you know that a dog does NOT even have to attack you to fall foul of the DD act, states 'there are reasonable apprehension that it will do so (refering to attack) he (the owner) is guilty of an offence. So if the dog barks or shows aggression towards you, but does NOT attack there is an offence committed within the DD act 1991.

That dog should be put down as it has bitten people before. We live near some drug selling ediots who breed staffs for the money they make and they never walk them and they are barking and fighting in the garden morning, noon, and night, and the council and the police do nothing. Its a living nightmare.

So you agree that people in rented homes shouldn't be permitted dogs then?

Chatting this afternoon to colleagues and they came up with a great idea...

There should be a new dog-licence. One off £250 registration fee at point of registration a DNA swab could be taken. Any incidents from attack to fouling could be traced back to the owner...

A potential whole new income stream for councils...

Reading poppy721 I rest my case, until something drastic happens, we have seen it happen in other areas as soon as someone is badly injured or a child mauled to death, all efforts are then made to seize these dogs, do we have to wait for that to happen in Oxfordshire? The DD act has teeth let us see it being applied.

The owner of the dog should be punished and banned from keeping animals, he clearly has no respect as he didnt care that his dog had bit someone and threatened the husband with more violence. THE OWNER IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE DOG!

These types of dogs are, by there very nature, powerful and aggressive. This can be changed if owned by the right person from a young age, but unfortunatley these type of dogs often appeal to certain type BECUASE they are strong and aggressive, much like the people who own them.

I think an outright ban on these dogs is the only way forward sadly, I feel for those who own these type responsibly but other types of dogs are out there and I can't remember the last time I read an article with the Headline

"Beagle attacks Tesco worker".....
