Animal rights protesters demand Uni stops tests

Animal rights protesters have handed over a 65,000-signature petition to Oxford University calling for it to stop tests on animals.

The signatures were collected by protest group Speak over the last five years.

Most were gathered calling when Speak was calling on the university to cease construction of a new biomedical sciences centre, which opened in November last year.

The petition, which was handed over to a representative from the university today. A spokesman for the university said: “We recognise that people have a range of views on this issue. The university has always said the building is going to be better for animal welfare and is supporting research into disabilities and deadly diseases.

“Animals are only used when no other research method is possible.”

Only 65,000 in 5 years. Hardly worth a mention seeming that they invited the whole world to sign. But how many of them would turn down life saving drugs that have been tested on animals, and suffer an agonising death themselves

Is this the Speak who said they opposed violence, but whose leader was then convicted of attempted fire bombing?

Seriously, we can't trust any of their claims any more.

An animal cannot have rights. If it could, how would it maintain that right against another animal that wanted to kill it? By sloppy misuse of the word, journos aid the animal facsists

Many good points raised by the above comments, i just would wish Speak updated there pictures on there web site, they were taken in America some 20 years ago when perhaps reguatlions were not as strict now, the new Life science building in Oxford is the Animal Hilton Hotel, it's awesome. Oh and yes, Speak's 'leader' Mel Broughton is indeed doing ten years at her majesty's pleasure for attempted fire bombings, and it's not his first visit to the grey bar hotel either.

My problem with excessive animal tesing is that it distorts the curriculum, leaving them lacking the broad based education necessary for entering the world of work or University...
