A strong second-half performance ensured Wallingford ran out comfortable 38-10 winners in their local derby against Henley Wanderers in South West 2 East.

It was a tight contest until 50 minutes when Wallingford’s superior fitness told.

Wanderers had the better of the early possession and territory, but could not capitalise with fly half Charlie Saward missing two kickable penalties.

The visitors finally took the lead on 25 minutes when they secured a turnover and Saward ran in a try, which he converted.

Just before half-time, Saward made it 10-0 with a penalty.

The wind that had boosted Wanderers in the first half dropped after the break.

But the hosts finally scored on 55 minutes when full back Angus Brettell wrong-footed the defence and fly half Jackson Sayce converted.

Within five minutes, scrum half Derek Viljoen raced in from 35 minutes for a solo try, with Sayce converting and adding a long-range penalty.

Wing Richard Turner, on his comeback after four months out injured, showed great pace to chase his own kick ahead and score.

Sayce converted from wide out and was again on target after hooker Tom Hill ran in try No 4.

The comeback was completed when centre Pete Holton won a turnover and popped the ball to Sayce, who sprinted in from 50 metres and converted.
