BMW JOB LOSSES: Workers find out who goes

A Former BMW worker has described his feelings at losing his job at the company’s Oxford factory.

Milosz Siedlecki spent three years as an assembly line worker at the company’s Cowley Mini Plant after arriving in the UK from Poland.

But today, he found himself among the first ‘blue’ shift workers to be axed as part of the company’s plans to lay off 850 agency staff.

The 26-year-old handed back his ID badge before being escorted from the plant shortly after 1pm.

Mr Siedlecki, of Phipps Road, Cowley, Oxford, said: “I was called off the track and five minutes later I found out it was all over.

“I knew it was coming. I hope I will be able to find a job, but it is hard to get a job right now.”

The car giant has announced it intends to lay off 500 agency staff over the course of this week.

Another 350 agency staff were let go last Monday after the manufacturer decided it would end its weekend shift.

Permanent contract staff who did work on the weekend ‘yellow’ shift will now work on weekdays, replacing agency workers on the ‘blue’ and ‘red’ shifts.

Representatives from BMW’s two main staff agencies, Manpower and right4staff, have been informing the agency workers they are no longer required on a one-to-one basis inside the plant since yesterday.

Every worker who finds themselves out of a job is given a letter explaining they will no longer be required because of the changing shift patterns.

Mr Siedlecki was told he would not have to work back more than 100 hours he owed the company in his ‘Working Time Account’.

He was also told he will be paid for the next seven days, but said nobody told him about returning his uniform.

Mr Siedlecki said: “For a long time we just heard rumours that eventually came true. I am happy because I wanted to leave, although the money was good.

“But my friend in there has got a girlfriend, two kids and bills to pay. He is afraid. What is going to happen if he loses his job? He might be in trouble.”

A BMW spokesman said: “We have started communication of plans and will continue with agency workers receiving one-to-one briefings this week.”

The key phrase in that report was

"Representatives from BMW’s two main staff agencies, Manpower and right4staff, have been informing the agency workers they are no longer required on a one-to-one basis inside the plant since yesterday"

Which goes to prove they did not work for BMW, they were not sacked by BMW, just told by the agency there work was no longer required.

Basic accountancy would tell any normal person that if your not selling your product how can you pay the temporary people who make it???

Oh and he came from Poland to work here, the press reckon employment and wages are now higher back there.

people are blowing this way out of proportion, they're all AGENCY which means temporary workers, which means they can be made redundant. and the weekend shift knew they were going to lose their jobs before the christmas shut-down, they just chose to ignore the fact that they were all goin to be made redundant. as much as i dont like the company for the way they are going about things, everyone really should stop bad mouthing the agencys and BMW and accept that jobs ave to be cut for money to be saved

Welcome to the UK.
Whilst I sympathise with anyone who has been made redundent BMW Agency Workers are no different to anyone else. ( I am soon to be made redundent as well)
I didn't notice Oxford Mail headlines when my partner was made redundent or any of the other individuals when they have lost their jobs.
The only reason it has hit the headlines is because there are so many at one time.
And contrary to what Government etc say there is very little help to be had: the job centre are patronising and the recruitment agencies never get back to you. Unless you are very lucky expect a long wait for a new job.

Well dand1987 to let you know some of the agency workers have been agency there at bmw for 9 YEARS!! that is not temp agency work. After 2 years by law agency workers who have wored for the same company are legally entitled to the same benefits as contracted workers however BMW have completely ignored the fact AND HERES THE GOOD PART! They are bringing in workers contracted to another agency to fill the agency jobs that they are making people "redundant from! again highly illegal, it was meant to happen a couple months ago but was stopped. People are being told by the bosses going in and saying "oh train joy blogs from rudolph and helman, they are taking over your job" nice huh.
at the end of the day people loose their jobs, thats not what they are really moaning about; its the treatment they have received. They were assured through out nothing was happening they were safe right up until the day of the notice, the union didnt really give a stuff they had known for 3 weeks it would happen but didnt give notice to the employees they represent, instead saying its all good guys.
lets be honest now would you like that?
i feel sorry for them on top of that manpower are refusing to give the the form to confirm they are being made redundant saying as they are still on their books they wont give it them unless they ask and make themselves volentarily redundant so they can not claim job seekers etc. again good ole agencies breaking the law but no one has the money to take them to court about it!
in the end after my ranting its not the job losses that hurt these guys its the bull that they get fro the agencies, the union and in some cases some of their managers that has hurt them the most. no one wants to lose their job but if they do they want to know and be spoken to like adults not kept in the dark being skirted around until that last possible second.
no wonder they all started to pee in the minis on the line before they left! i wonder what customers will have the benefit of those cars.

My mate was an agency worker at BMW, he saw this coming like anyone with sense should have done & he had another job sorted before Xmas, he had been there 4 years & showed a bit of initiative to get out of there when everything was clearly going t1ts up. If anyone was shocked to get fired then they're a fool, the downturn in the car industry & the mini in particular has been in the news for almost a year now.
