Update: Students seize Bodleian building in Gaza protest

Students claim they have seized control of part of the historic Bodleian Library today in a protest over Oxford University’s links with Israel.

As many as 100 protesters — the majority of whom are believed to be students — entered the Clarendon Building, in Broad Street, at noon.

One said they were prepared to stay inside “for days, even weeks”.

They have released a list of demands to Oxford University, including:

  • Releasing a statement condemning Israeli attacks on Gaza, especially the Islamic University
  • Provide scholarships to five Palestinian students from Gaza
  • Cease investment in arms manufacturer BAE Systems, which they say supplies weapons to Israel
  • Provide resources to help rebuild Gaza University
  • Demand Balliol College cancels a lecture series recently inaugurated by Shimon Peres, the president of Israel.

yeah.....that'll be useful. Amazing how much time you can waste when you dont have a job!

Are these students going to help financially towards these proposals?

Thought not!

The Clarendon Building is on Broad Street, opposite the Kings' Arms. Please come down and show your support.

The demands will never be met, plain and simple. Why should they? try doing something useful like meetings with politicians who atually make the decisions. They'll soon come out once their supply of lentils and rice run out, or there's a cheap beer offer down at the SU bar.

"Provide resources to help rebuild Gaza University"

Why don't they just call Mummy and Daddy and ask them to increase their credit card limit, then they can pay for it themselves

On Thursday 8th January 300 demonstrators held a vigil in Cornmarket in support of the people of Gaza. The "Oxford Mail" said nothng about the protest for five days, then made a tiny mention of it as a footnote at the end of a couple of inside-page articles.

On Thursday 15th 250 demonstrators held a second vigil in Cornmarket. The "Oxford Mail" said nothing at all.

On Saturday 17th 650 people rallied in Bonn Square to hear speakers including Cllr Tanner, Cllr Williams, an Israeli professor and a Palestinian mother all talk to the crowd about Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Between 800 and 1,000 people marched peacefully through central Oxford expressing their support for Gaza. I stood beside Supertintendent Andy Murray as he confirmed there had been 650 demonstrators in Bonn Square, and praised the demonstrators for being well-organised, well-stewarded and peaceful.

The "Oxford Mail"'s only report of Oxford's third and largest demonstration for Gaza was a tiny two-column-inch "in brief" mention squeezed into the margin of page 5: no photograph, no names of who spoke there or anything that they said.

This week's "Oxford Times" is even worse: no report whatsoever of Saturday's demonstration of the two Thursday vigils. Local peaceful protests for Palestine are not news for Newsquest, even if nearly 1,000 people take part.

The "Oxford Mail" claims "We aim to provide our readers with a fair, balanced and accurate news and information service." Its parlous coverage of these three well-attended local demonstrations will make some of us wonder.

To its credit the "Oxford Mail" has published a series of readers' letters about Gaza, all of them supporting Palestine and condemning Israel. And it has published a report every few days on the news from Gaza itself, which of course is the real issue rather than what several hundred Oxonians have been doing about it.

However, now a much smaller demonstration of an estimated 100 students has occupied the Clarendon Building. The "Oxford Mail" responds with a photograph and gives this story much more prominent and detailed coverage. This suggests that in order to get an adequate report in the "Oxford Mail" it matters not how many of you hoold a demonstration but whether any of you causes any trouble.

What local campaigns and opinions an editor agrees or disagrees with must be his free editorial choice. However, large local events, including peaceful demonstrations, are local news and should have been properly reported. We deserve better from our two local newspapers.

The UN wants to take action against Israel. This cannot happen without active support from national governments. If we do not show concern, the government doesn't bother, simple as that. Please put your cynicism to one side and take a positive stance towards bringing peace to an area of tremendous suffering.

The point of this protest was to raise awareness and concern amongst students and the population as a whole. We choose a prominent yet unimportant building to occupy, and did not disturb any students or townspeople in either nuisance or expense.

It comes as no great surprise to Me that Pro-Palestinan Demonstrators are now disrupting Students & Lecturers going about Their lawfull business . The one-sided & unbalanced Demonstrations that have been carried out by the Totalitatian Left & Islamists have led to a climate of fear & intimidation which has now emboldened these Enemies of Democracy to attack Academic Freedom & occupy buildings of learning . ( there has also been a massive wave of Anti-Semitic Attacks , smashing up of shops , violence against The Police Officers protecting The Israeli Embassy etc )

I hope that The University holds firm & makes no concessions whatsoever to this Rent-A-Mob of Extremists .

All Our Freedoms are at risk from These self-righteous & fanatical hooligans - We must all stand up & Resist this Totalitarianism now before it's too late .
