This is a vision of how Oxford Brookes University’s new Headington campus will look after its £150m redevelopment.

A striking glass building and a new public square facing Headington Road will form the centrepiece of the scheme.

Brookes says the landmark five-storey atrium will provide a modern new gateway to Oxford, giving the university a commanding presence in Headington.

Shops, banks and cafes will be located off the square, which also offers space for public art in what will be one of the city’s most highly visible venues.

Brookes will also contribute £500,000 to road, pavement and lighting improvements and bus lanes in Headington Road.

The scheme also features a new five-storey library on the west side of the site, a 320-seat lecture theatre, a new four-storey teaching building, food hall and students’ union with a nightclub.

A courtyard will be created in the heart of the site, where there will be a stage for outdoor public performances or lectures. The plans go on show to the public for the first time tomorrow, with the university aiming to submit a planning application early next year.

Deputy vice-chancellor Rex Knight said: “This building has been three years in the planning and has involved considerable consultation with staff, students and the community.

“We have seen in other universities how an investment in buildings can revolutionise the way students learn. We want our students to spend more time on campus after a lecture or tutorial, sharing ideas, working in groups and developing new skills.

“Our proposals have considerable benefits for people in Oxford as well. The combination of a new public square, new public art and the striking glass design of the building will help create a modern gateway for Oxford.”

The buildings will replace ageing structures, some of which have already been demolished, including most of the Darcy Building, which covered a third of the Gipsy Lane campus, much of which dates from the 1950s and 1960s. New routes across the campus will include a north-south path linking Headington Road to Cheney Lane.

Brookes hopes the new student centre, providing 22,000 square metres of space, will open in 2012, in what will be only the first phase of a development lasting a decade.

The work will be paid for from surpluses saved for long-term investment and a grant from the Higher Education Funding Council.

A display of the plans will be held at the Buckley Building, in Gipsy Lane, on Friday, from 4pm-8pm; Saturday, from 10am-4pm; Thursday, November 20, from 4pm-8pm; Friday, Nov-ember 21, from 4pm-8pm; and Saturday, November 22, from 10am-4pm.
