Drunk students land in trouble

Student rugby players last night apologised for “inappropriate and offensive” behaviour which led to police ejecting more than 30 of them from an Oxford pub.

Ronnie Gunson, the president of Oxford Brookes University Rugby Club, said team-mates had taken part in “foolish pranks” at the Hobgoblin pub, in Cowley Road, and admitted a social event had got out of hand.

University vice chancellor Prof Janet Beer has launched an investigation into the incident, which happened in garden of the pub on Thursday.

In a statement, the university said it was taking the matter “extremely seriously”.

Members of the rugby club, who were wearing sports jackets and brightly-coloured trousers, had been drinking heavily and shouting through a megaphone as part of the social event.

They were also surrounded by parts of an animal carcass when police arrived.

Officers were called at about 4pm, after Alex Mann, 29, of Cowley, complained that her Honda Civic was showered with beer as she drove past the pub’s garden in Bullingdon Road.

Ms Mann, who was with her two-year-old daughter Lily, said: “One guy who was dressed up like he had been hunting stood in front of my car really aggressively.

“While he stood in front of me, the rest of them stood up on the beer tables and threw three or four pints of beer at my car.

“My car was soaked and it stinks inside. I felt really intimidated and scared.

“They were really horrifically drunk.

“I have seen a lot of drunk students, and drunk students are fine, but that was really disgusting.

“I was so intimidated but they just laughed at me.”

One student handed Ms Mann £20 to pay for her car to be cleaned after the police arrived.

Mr Gunson said everyone involved in the incident had since come forward to take responsibility for their actions.

He said: “During the social, members became in-toxicated and behaved in an inappropriate and offensive manner.

“As club president, I would like to apologise to the community and to the university. The club would particularly like to offer apologies to the member of the community who felt intimidated by the actions of some of our members.

“I can offer no excuses for the behaviour of our members – other than to say these were foolish pranks that were not intended to offend but got completely out of hand.”

Robyn Carter, the manager of the nearby Joe Austin Florists, said he had seen a student with a pot plant attached to his head and another wearing a sex toy earlier in the day.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said between 30 and 40 people had been told to leave the pub.

Prof Beer said: “I am very concerned to hear of these reports about our students behaving in an offensive and antisocial manner.

“The university is taking this matter extremely seriously.”

She said all of the students in the pub at the time would be interviewed and had been banned from matches representing the university until an investigation was completed.

Rick Windell, manager of the Hobgoblin, declined to comment.

This is really disappointing to read. As a student at Brookes the rugby team get no respect and everyone understands them for the drunken idiots that they are. I hope the rest of the Oxford public don't look upon the other Brookes students with the same opinions. As for the University, I hope the keep their promise and really discipline these idiots rather than just let them off with a warning which I have seen in the past.

I am ashamed that a small minority of drunken idiots have tarnished the Universities growing positive reputation once again.

The Rugby team is not a well respected society at the University and brings with it connotations of stupidity and a lack of respect for their community, and ultimately thier University.

This is just an example of how ann entire University can be effected by a group of immature show offs, which is the reputation that the Rugby team has around the area.

I hope that the positive press about this University of late is not over-shadowed by this act of disrespectful behaviour by a group that should be punished.

Having known members of the Oxford Brookes rugby team, I can say with confidence that they are being incorrectly portrayed in this article. Yes they get drunk, yes they have fun, but then don't all students? I do think that the lady was within her rights to complain, however personal appologies have clearly already been made and I don't feel that there is a need for this to go any further. As for Ronnie Gunson, he is one of the best men I know and I am proud to say he is a member of my university. We've all seen worse than this on Cowley road... Let's focus on the real issues.

PRock says...

Here Here msterygals.

I whole heartedly agree with the above comment and would like to reitterate the fact that the Brookes Rugby team have been incorrectly portrayed.
Admitedly, such behaviour as to what happened to Ms Mann's car is not condoned nor thought to be particularly funny, by any member of the community, including that of the Rugby Club themselves.
The Club represented by their President Ronnie Gunson have shown great remorse and will take what ever consequences they are faced with. I think it is now up to the community to accept these warm apologies and look beyond this particular behaviour and recognise everyone makes mistakes, particularly the youth.
The boys, as individuals are good, thoughtful people and I am proud to know some of them personally. As for other 'users' on here making personal attacks against Ronnie Gunson, I suggest your behaviour is no better than that shown by the intoxicated few last Thursday, and would like to point out that the President, Gunson and his fellow committee members could not be doing a better job this year or could have handled this unfortunate incident in a more appropriate way.
Now lets get back to the real issues, such as the rise in Muggings and stabbings in the Cowley area.

Mr. O Munich - "I am ashamed that a small minority of drunken idiots have tarnished the Universities growing positive reputation "

I trust you have actually been for a night out in Oxford mid-week and as such you should be familiar with the thousands of students that take to our streets from late evening to the early hours. The behaviour of the Rugby club in question is not just performed by a minority of students, but rather by the mass majority, week-in-week-out. Thus the negative attitude of the local populous toward students.

Mr.O says...
8:14am Tue 11 Nov 08

Talkofthetown.

I have indeed been on many a night out in Oxford, and I would agree that thousands of students take to the streets after the clubs close, I am not saying there is anything wrong with that, where else can they go.

My point is that not all students vandalise cars and local residence, on their way home. Why should all students be tarnished by the same brush?

This comes weeks after a great review of the University in the Good University guide, and as a former student myself, I think it's a shame, that's all, a shame.

This is a rugby club I have been proud to be associated with for seven years now, and yes it sadens me to hear of the beer throwing incident. However, what cannot be overlooked is all the positive work the rugby club has done for the University itself by going away to other Universities for fixtures, representing Brookes impecably, and more often than not, actually beating more prestigious 'red-brick' universities. This article smacks of a reporter trying to be a big-time journalist, but unfortunately falling short and failing to remember he works for a local paper.

as a student of the university myself i feel embarrassed about the behaviour of the people involved. i was on cowley road myself on thursday and saw from the opposite side of the road around ten extremely drunk lads forcing another to do press ups while covering him in beer. passers by were literally crossing the road to avoid them and i witnessed several shop owners looking through their windows at the spectacle unfolding outside. my boyfriend's housemates also walked past the hob that afternoon and saw some of them running around with a pig's head. it just baffles me how 'young adults' who are studying at a university that has gained a solid reputation as the best new university in the country, continue to behave in this manner. getting drunk is one thing in the evening before a night out, but in the middle of the day is ridiculous. they seriously need to grow up.

What an embarrassment these people are. Walking around dressed as morons, taking pig heads into a public pub, doing press up's on the street while having beer thrown over you, throwing alcohol over innocent people walking passed... and this is what I saw just being outside the Hobgoblin for 2 minutes. I was walking passed with my girlfriend and she was a bit scared, so just imagine how elderly and other people walking passed on that day would have felt. It's about time people acting like this were punished by our University as it is exactly these kind of students that are bringing the reputation (and grades) down at Brookes.

What we must remember is that this is a situation that has been blown out of proportion.

The boys have apologised to the press, the University and to the women in question. As stated in the article. We must also remember that students are involved in a drinking culture, and the situation is far worse in other cities.

If anyone was to look at the editorial comments later on in the paper they would see that the University has dealt with it in a 'swift and responsive way' and therefore the outlook upon the University has been 'enhanced' and 'not diminished'.

No one is condoning the boys, not the University, not the community, and not the club itself. Therefore why must people continue to attack a situation that is being resolved? We must remember that this is an incident, and it is being dealt with.

Brookesstudent2 says...

Everyone is too quick to dismiss the rubgy club as druken idiots, who are selfish and rude. This shows that you have cleary not got to know any of them.

I bet most of you didnt know that Brookes Rugby does charity work; for the past 2 years the clubs chosen charity has been Children with Leukimia. Last week one of the rugby lads ran the NY marathon and raised over £1000 for the charity.
The club are soon to be having a rugby club blood drive, getting as many of the lads as possible to donate blood.

The club also has 15+ members who will be running the London Marathon, for Children with Leukimia, with aims of raising £10,000.

This isnt something that the club has to do, it is something the club wants to do. Name me one other club in the Uni which does that.

Brookesstudent2, I appreciate your comments as trying to moderate this incident by claiming that it is being dealt with, ok fair point, but that's what is supposed to happen...so you pay £ 20 or 30 to redeem yourself, write some notes to the press and that’s ok…what were they thinking when their idiocy was at full sight, they were not thinking and that is what concerns me.

You and I have clearly heard different accounts of what happened that day. But from what I have read and heard, I am pretty sure it is not a false accusation. The wider issue here is that the some of the boys involved are viewing this incident as 'a f***ing joke' and saying that 'surely no one in oxford is going to take the article seriously?' (Direct quotes) I hope people, specifically the University itself, do take this seriously and not as a joke, which is what some commenter’s seem to be doing.

2. Talkofthetown-"I trust you have actually been for a night out in Oxford mid-week and as such you should be familiar with the thousands of students that take to our streets from late evening to the early hours"
-Surely your not insinuating that this behaviour is remotely associated with the incident in question. You must be talking generally about the youthful 'yobbish' behaviour which afflicts all ares of the country, and is so often reported in the mass media. I'm not overly sure why you would mention this as it further demonstrates if anything that this is a hugely isolated incident, and there have been many, more severe incidents at other universities.
3. 'oxxxb' I am by now means condoning this action, however I do feel that huge speculation has escalated this incident. I'm sure you are not naive enough to think that this behaviour has only ever occured in Brookes Rugby. Having played for a university Rugby team, with many of my peers in the same situation, i can assure you that this kind of behaviour occurs on a daily basis throughout the country, and please remember that the boys having beer poored on them are in that situation of their own accord. This has been blown massively out of proportion and everyone will agree there are more concerning matters that need to be adressed, especially in the cowley area.

While i appreciate this is unacceptable behaviour, i stress this is an isolated incident, and this is not a perfect world. Everyone makes mistakes, and I hope the young men who have stood up and taken responsibilty for their actions will learn from it.

I instead would suggest that Ronnie Gunson has done a sterling job in handling this, and would commend him on the maturity in which he deals with the press, and represents his university.

Finally oxxxb, drinking in the middle of the day is not ridiculous.

talkof the town says...

I was trying to put across the fact that a lot of students get drunk mid-week and mid-day, many often get too drunk and as such do things that a person from their parents generation would frown upon (and lets face it, we've all been there at least once). It is too easy just to focus on one group of lads on one day in one incident. This article has only come to fruition because the blame can be placed on something and somebody: Brookes Rugby and its President.

I imagine the university has the power to throw them all out. This article has brought to light some disgraceful behaviour, but in naming and shaming in such a public way has tarnished not just the club, but all students and if those lads are unlucky enough; their careers. Think either way on the issue, I just think it unfair

It is too easy for the offenders in this case to offer cash. This causes them no inconvenience or discomfort as they do not appear to be short of money (or leisure time in which to spend it). The driver is still left with the extra work of cleaning the car herself, as well as the upset of the incident. Really making amends would mean the rugby players who intimidated the driver and damaged her property actually cleaning the car at a time and place of her choosing and hearing from her first hand about the distress and inconvenience they had caused.
