Council set to axe Christmas

First published in News by

A plan to axe the word Christmas from this year’s city centre festive celebrations has been criticised by religious leaders.

Council chiefs have confirmed there will be no traditional Christ-mas light switch-on in Oxford this year, but instead revellers will be greeted with a 25-metre high mobile of lanterns in the shape of the solar system.

A city council spokesman confirmed this year’s event would be called the “Winter Light Festival” to include all religious denominations.

Shoppers on the streets of Oxford criticised the decision to cut out the word Christmas and called for a return to tradition.

There will also be no mention of the word Christmas in the reduced "festive lights" programme to be erected in the city.

The idea is the brainchild of the charity Oxford Inspires, which has been set up to promote culture in the county and increase participation in cultural events.

Councillors have claimed they are not “Christmas killers”, but the move has outraged religious leaders of all denominations in the city.

Sabir Hussain Mirza, chairman of the Muslim Council of Oxford, said: "I'm really upset about this. This is the one occasion which everyone looks forward to in the year. Christians, Muslims and other religions all look forward to Christmas.

"This is going to be a disaster. I'm angry and very, very disappointed.

"Christmas is special and we shouldn't ignore it. Christian people should be offended and 99 per cent of people will be against this. Christmas is part of being British and we shouldn't hide it away."

Rabbi Eli Bracknell, who teaches at the Jewish Educational Centre, in Cowley Road, said: "It's important to maintain a traditional British Christmas. Anything that waters down traditional culture and Christianity in the UK is not positive for the British identity.

"Winter includes all of these festivals but it also conceals them."

Reverend James Grote, of the John Bunyan Baptist Church, in Cowley, said: "People are not offended by hearing each other's faiths.

"Our religious community is diverse and each one should be expressed. You can only do that if you name the faiths represented."

Last year the city council came under criticism for asking Lord Mayor John Tanner to switch on the Christmas Lights and not stumping up cash for a celebrity.

This year it has decided to do away with the switch-on altogether and instead lights will be turned on automatically at the beginning of the Winter Light event as part of the unveiling of the new Bonn Square on Friday, November 28.

A giant mobile of the solar system will hang from a crane in Broad Street on that night and will be lit up by a pyrotechnic display of fireworks by performance arts company 'Walk the Plank'.

Oxford Inspires spokesman Tei WIlliams said: "The ceremony takes place on November 28. It's hardly Christmas if it's November.

“In Oxfordshire we have Winter Light which is a whole festival spanning two months. Within that festival will be Christmas Carol services."

Liz Gresham of Oxford Inspires added: "We changed the name to be more inclusive.

“We have Diwali at this time of year and Hannukah, so these are represented as well."

Deputy Leader of the council Ed Turner said: "We are not Christmas killers. Among councillors there's certainly no desire to downgrade the importance or the prominence given to Christmas. Several festivals take place at this time of year so this is a way of celebrating them all at the one time.

"There's going to be a Christmas tree and even if the lights are called something else to me they will be Christmas lights."

Put in a proper council next time , one that puts adequate provision of public lavatories before "diversity" and "inclusivity" and "fairness" and all the other words that have been spewed out incessantly since even before 1997

Oxford Council must be run by extremely out of touch fools who do not even follow national politics elsewhere.

If they did, they would recognise that Birmingham Council's attempt to introduce 'Winterval' was a complete debacle and is held up to this day as a prominent example of 'Political Correctness Gone Mad'

Who ARE these (predominantly white middle class)Leftie Liberals who take it upon themselves to both insult, undermine and belittle the BRITISH CHRISTIAN MAJORITY while at the same time patronising and misrepresenting the views and desires of every MINORITY in this Country? Democracy means representing the views of the majority not ignoring them and ASSUMING the minority are 'offended' by their very existence in their own Country.

While I appreciate the comments of some 'moderate' Muslims on this issue, the fact remains that Islam is generally NOT a tolerant religion. Mulims can and are shunned and even killed for apostacy (leaving Islam), there are no churches in Saudi Arabia (despite them spending BILLIONS on promoting Islam in the West- including the Marston Road Islamic Centre) and in Afghanistan a young British female aid worker was murdered for 'spreading Christianity'.

Hand wringing do- gooder Politicallt Correct liberals who undermine Britian's previously strong history and traditions thus make the Islamification of Britain a step closer are turkey's voting for Christmas- sorry- for 'Winter light festival'.

Oxford is increasingly becoming not an inspiration but a warning of what NuLabour's failed doctrines of multiculturalism, open door immigration, political correctness, community breakdown and nannying officials result in.

After reading the article in the Oxford Mail of the intentions to drop the celebration of Christmas along with its traditional lights, I along with my family are OUTRAGED at this decision! Who are they as a so called charity, to take this very important traditional religious festival away from us! We respect and have never had any problems with all other religious ceremonies, and as my husband works very closely with the asian community as part of his work, has never come across any criticism of how we as Christians celebrate our Christmas, In fact we exchange gifts and cards as much as any one else. Oxford Inspirations are going to cause a religious feud by their meddling. We as a family ( and I suspect thousands of others)are so angry, My advice to Oxford Inspirations is PLEASE dont represent Oxford in your ideas, as Oxford nor the surrounding areas want you to, and as far as Oxford City Council are concerned ... Stop aiding and abetting racial tensions by allowing & employing Oxford Inspirations to act on behalf of the Oxford people. A better way of spending your resources would have been to consult the people of Oxford first, then you would NOT have got this SO terribly WRONG! Also, I would like add that if this goes ahead, we will not be going to Oxford City to do our shopping as usual this year, as we feel Oxford will not have the same traditional air of celebration.

Oxford Inspires may indeed be a charity in legal form, but it is almost entirely funded so far as I am aware by public bodies - the county and district councils, the two universities and so on.

Their talk of it obviously not being Christmas because it's 28th November is purest sophistry. It demeans all faith for one faith to be subjugated in such a way. You can't make religion "inclusive" - that is just the way we are - we are mutually exclusive by nature and by belief!

We can celebrate each others' festivals and more importantly respect each others' wishes to celebrate our own festivals, but there isn't any hope of a merger any time soon, at least not to order from the Town Hall.

If they wanted to try to be inclusive they clearly needed to switch them on before Diwali last week anyway so it's not even superficially multi-faith/multi-cu

I am absolutely sickened by the way this country is going. So many men & women have fought & died, and been martyred to preserve this unique nation, only for everything to be whittled away by overpaid civil servants, bit by bit... Now it seems it takes our non-native Britons to remind us of how completely pathetic our society has become! This country is one of the most tolerant in the world, & we should be proud of that - but after mixing with just about every culture you can think of, during my working life, I haven't met one person that thinks we should sacrifice any of our traditions just to be "inclusive". It's downright patronising if anything! Most people would admit that most of our Christmas traditions are pagan anyway; but the one thing that does remind us of the birth of Christ, the name "Christ-mas", and we abolish it... What a shallow, secular society we are becoming! You can bet your life we'll keep all the rest of the commercial tosh that remains of "Christmas" - You bet, there's money at stake! It's about time we took a leaf out of our non-Christian brother's & sister's books, & start respecting our own spiritual heritage.

What a surprise- all of 'Oxford Inspires' staff are 'arty' white women.

The sooner we rid the country of these publicly funded bodies of well- paid members of the meddling classes the better.

Just how much of our tax money goes on this sort of nonsense as advertised in the appointments section of 'The Guardian'?

NuLabour seem to have created no end of positions for people who have such weighty responsibilities in areas such as cultural diversity; community cohesion; making the arts more 'accessible'; monitoring enrichment; gender awareness training roles and all that other PC guff.

Recently the government suddenly found large pots of cash to give out to Muslim groups to 'prevent extremism'- including an exhibition showing 'Muslims in a positive light' in Birmigham and even a bung for Oxfordshire Muslims- despite there being 'no history' of Muslim extremism in the County.

While they're giving out free money I suggest any black readers ask for cash to prevent a resurgence of the Black Panthers; any whites to get a bid in to stop the KKK or Aryan Nation taking a foothold' and any Indians to suggest that a few quid might go a long way in halting the revival of the thuggee sect.

What is evident here is that (regardless of home culture, race or religion) WE DON'T WANT anyone messing around with our history, culture and traditions thank you very much, and these 'trendy' white meddlers in these wasteful organisations are very much out of touch with what both the majority and the various minorities in the Country want.

More importantly, what have the Oxford traders got to say about this? Why would someone want to come "Christmas" shopping in Oxford when they can go to Milton Keynes, Cheltenham, Aylsebury etc where the local authorities always put on fantastic Christmas decorations and events. I think this is more about money saving than diversity to be honest. The City Council have been putting out the same cheap lights for the last 3 years - maybe they were too embarrassed this year?

Oxford City Council has done something quite remarkable, their decision uniting all but one person among 60 comments. The sad thing for the Council is that the respondents are united AGAINST their decision.

If democracy works at all, residents of Oxford surely must tell their council to re-consider.

On a related subject, I ask whether the upset is mainly about loss of respect for our christian tradition, or about the insult to the "branding" of the "Christmas business"? I think probably only half the comments related to the former.

The Christmas brand, trotted out by the shops from October to January each year, has become a national, indeed an international sickness. We need a cure, but a "Winter Light Festival" is not the way to start.

I am, therefore, very encouraged to see 99% of the comments here attacking the proposals by your local council and the "charity", Oxford (Un)Inspires. With all the other things going on in our ancestral homeland in an attempt to wipe out English culture, I was beginning to wonder whether my fellow countrymen and women had lost the will to live and had just given up on trying to preserve our ancient traditions. Quite obviously, if the good people of Oxford are anything to go by, they haven't. Enough is enough, folks, we all need to start the fightback against these insidious attempts to suppress the English (and the Welsh, and the Scots, and the Irish) - this is our Country and we want it back! That 'Oxford Inspiration' deems fit to speak on behalf of the residents of Oxford, without consultation on what is THE most important event in the Christian calender, is quite frankly, extremely presumptious.

Christmas is celebrated by Christians, Muslims and others, as well as non-believers alike. In particular, children see Christmas as a magical time of the year.

The word 'Christmas' (Pagan or otherwise) IS the noun which explains the celebrational period. If Oxford Inspiration (and Oxford City Council) wish to water down the core element of 'Christmas' by using such terminology as "Winter light Festival", it's NOT Christmas! ... Lets call it 'Celebration of 4th Season', for it means the same. And if the Council (or anyone else for that matter) wishes to combine the British way of celebration, lets get rid of Easter, Whitson, Christmas and call it 'World, sometime in the year Festivities' NO, Christmas is Christmas IS Christmas, and let's not be fooled into thinking that it is anything but Christmas. If those who wish to trivialise the basis of Christmas by calling it 'Winter light Festival' then they should leave it as such and put on, in addition THE Christmas Festival. If the city council cannot afford such a Christmas show, then cancel it, save the money, and let the business of Trade & Commerce take over, who I am sure will do the right thing and put on a Christmas celebration in the way which tradition expects, and do the City proud.

Councillor Sab Hussain Mizar, put the whole business into context, Christmas IS Christmas, not a Winter Light Festival, you can get that at the north pole!
Oxford Inspires have decided to create a new holiday season instead of Christmas – which celebrates Lights and other religions. The Hindu and Sikh Diwali celebrations started on 28th October – so their own party seems a little late.

I am outraged that they have been allowed to upset everyone by this unilateral idiocy. Santa Claus, Christmas trees, lights, music and partying are universal to all citizens of the UK and it is not a Christian celebration – very sadly.

To be inclusive – just let each of us celebrate our own religion and stop this oppressive, offensive, divisive and insulting behaviour.

There is Christmas and there’s Christ’s Mass – and then there’s this misguided Mess!

You are right, people do pay for this including Muslim, Christian, Atheist, Hndu, Buddhist etc. If you want to decide what the council does then become a councillor and then you can impose only your belief on all of us as you seem to be advocating this. There is no tradition of a two month festival starting in November so what are you talking about? My reply email to Oxford City Council and Cllr Bob Price:

"We have read what you said and propose you re-arrange 'Winter Lights Festival' not to coincide with ANY of the traditional and religious festivals that happen around this time of year. We are sure that people like ourselves would much more want and appreciate this kind of event to come maybe after Christmas and other religious events, so as not to take away
or over shadow what is really important. This time of year (and the run up to Christmas including November) is an extremely busy, and in some cases a very stressful time, and maybe to have something to focus on like 'Winter Lights Festival' would be better suited to a time in January, when nights
are 'still dark' and people can relax, enjoy and probably welcome such an event.

May we remind you that 'Winter Lights Festival' is NOT an historical event, and should therefore take it's place in our annual calendar so as not to
further upset and put pressure on peoples lives. We are sure all involved have had good intentions in putting on such an event, but you have got the timing SO terribly wrong. Please, please listen to what people are saying.

We will continue to campaign this very important issue as long as it takes until it is resolved"

Please people lets get our voices heard!!!!

This time of year (and the run up to Christmas including November) is an extremely busy, and in some cases a very stressful time, and maybe to have something to focus on like 'Winter Lights Festival' would be better suited to a time in January, when nights are 'still dark' and people can relax, enjoy and probably welcome such an event. May we remind you that 'Winter Lights Festival' is NOT an historical event, and should therefore take it's place in our annual calendar so as not to further upset and put pressure on peoples lives. We are sure all involved have had good intentions in putting on such an event, but you have got the timing SO terribly wrong. Please, please listen to what people are saying. We will continue to campaign this very important issue as long as it takes until it is resolved" Please people lets get our voices heard!!!! Brenda Pope

'Racism' traditionally meant discriminating AGAINST someone due to their race- which is clearly wrong.

NuLabour and PC obsessed finger- wagers have tried to expand this to include 'the belief that people are DIFFERENT according to their race’, which they clearly ARE.

How much of this is down to genetics and how much to culture/ religion/ family life is debateable, but I suspect would reveal that much IS genetic- as with the inherent differences between boys and girls that ‘progressive’ Lefties tried to disregard with disastrous results in education and family life.

Worse still, NuLabour’s Thought Crimes Unit define a ‘racist incident’ as: ‘any incident which is perceived by the victim OR ANY OTHER PERSON as racist. So, if I say to a little old lady: ‘That’s a lovely cardigan you’re wearing’ some uninformed hysterical nutter can accuse me of racially abusing her! If an incident is racially aggravated, the sentence is doubled, so clearly it’s twice as bad to assault or murder someone for being black, white or purple than if you do so because they are wearing slip on shoes or ‘looked at you funny’.

Crying ‘Racist!’ at people you disagree with is a Leftist tactic called ‘closing down the argument’- most people abhor true racism (. the discriminatory kind) so labelling someone a racist instantly invalidates any point they may have had. Unfortunately, the term is now so over- used that it undermines attacks on REAL racism and is increasingly seen as the cheap, shoddy tactic of avoiding any valid counter argument by attacking the opponent, not the argument, that it is.

The British are traditionally fair, liberal and tolerant. Unfortunately, in recent years this has been abused by people crossing perfectly safe Countries to reside here due to our generosity; by people scamming our benefits, immigration and employment systems and by ‘nanny knows best’ politicians ignoring the majority on issue such as increased EU powers, population levels, immigration policy and national identity.

A further group are those from abroad who, rather than enjoy the freedom and tolerance they came to Britain for, insist on trying to undermine (with government complicity) the British way of life by refusing to learn the language or integrate; by insisting on separate schooling; by wishing to be judged under non- British law; by claiming that homophobic, misogynistic, barbaric or racist practices are ‘part of their culture’ and thus beyond judgement or challenge.

I can understand why someone from the Third World would try to get to the UK, or a Muslim to impose an Islamic Caliphate, or, as happened locally, a foreign landlord would wish to bring his extended family in and charge us all through Social Services to house them all and pay him to do so, but what dismays me is that the government and organisations such as ‘Oxford (Un)inspires’ should do so much to help them achieve their aims, while ignoring or branding as ‘racist’ the 90% white British MAJORITY in this Country.

Perhaps they suffer from post colonial guilt and self- hate that makes them ashamed of their own Country, history, culture, traditions and even race- the PC lobby does seem overwhelmingly white, middle- class and affluent- but I don’t share this feeling and you’d be hard pressed to find any other Country, race, religion or culture who do.

I cannot imagine similar bodies of hand- wringers from Iran to Somalia to India to Saudi Arabia worrying that celebrating national religious holidays may ‘offend’ or ‘exclude’ anyone- why does it happen with such depressing regularity here?

A few intolerant white atheists want to abolish Christmas in Oxford. They pretend that members of other religions would be offended by Christmas, and that banning centuries of popular tradition is somehow "inclusive".

The French and Russian revolutions tried to abolish Christmas and failed. Most Japanese are Shinto or Buddhist but they've adopted Christmas with gusto. Midwinter festivals are much older than Christ but the "Christmas" name has stuck and very few people want to pretend otherwise.

Mr Scrooge has returned from the dead, zombie-like, and feels at home in an attic of Oxford Town Hall. But he will choke on his humbugs in miserly solitude and Christmas will return to Oxford next year!

Statement from the Bishop of Portsmouth on the "Winter Light Festival"

Bishop Crispian Hollis, the Catholic Bishop of Portsmouth, has the southern side of Oxford as part of his diocese, and had this comment to make about Christmas events in Oxford being renamed as part of the "Winter Light Festival"

"Once again, this is political correctness gone mad and I am delighted to read that our Muslim and Jewish friends see it that way too. It betrays an ignorance of the significance of Christmas as a time of celebration for all, seeing it merely as a collection of Carol Services. The decision by the City Council offers a gratuitous slight to the Christian community in the city, does nothing to promote racial harmony and promotes, in the name of inclusivity, an exclusion of the traditions of a very significant proportion of the population of the city. I deplore this decision and I hope the Council will think again.?
