Have-a-go student honoured

Joseph Raimondo Joseph Raimondo

A student who chased a burglar before rugby tackling him to the ground has been hailed a hero after receiving an award.

Joseph Raimondo was cycling to dinner at Lincoln College, Oxford, when he heard passer-by Dr Giulia Zanderighi shouting for help and running after burglar Jason Callaghan.

Dr Raimondo, 26, leapt on his bike and followed the burglar along Parks Road and South Parks Road before overtaking him and blocking his path.

Callaghan, who had been spotted burgling Wadham College minutes earlier, told Dr Raimondo he had a knife, swung at him, snatched the bike and tried to flee.

Undeterred by the threats, Dr Raimondo jumped on the burglar's back, pulled him off the bike and pinned him to the ground until police arrived.

Dr Raimondo, a qualified medical doctor currently studying for a PhD in neuroscience, was given an award by the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Ian Inshaw.

'He definitely deserves this award. He is a great guy — a hero'

Brigadier Inshaw said: "This is a wonderful story of a public-spirited citizen who saw an injustice and was determined to do something about it.

"He persisted until he had brought the offender to a position where he could be remanded by the police."

Judge Julian Hall recommended Dr Raimondo for the award after sentencing Callaghan to four years in jail in May. Callaghan admitted burgling Wadham College in February.

Dr Raimondo, who is originally from South Africa but now lives in Western Road, South Oxford, said: "I wasn't thinking terribly clearly. I was probably a little bit reckless."

Pc Elaine Durham, of Thames Valley Police, said: "Without Dr Raimondo's help we would never have caught Callaghan.

"He definitely deserves this award. He is a great guy — a hero."

It is splendid to see a positive article on a positive action by a citizen. This is a far cry from the weak-kneed article in the Oxford Times last Friday ("Man cleared of assaulting youth found in garden.", page 8). Why can the local papers not stand up for people who are doing the right thing? The "man cleared", aged 64, was reported to have found a youth in his back garden, hauled him inside and called the police. More power to him. The Newspaper should applaud, not just report that charges have been "dropped because of lack of evidence against the 64 year old"!

Joseph the blade, my brother in arms. You are the big bright shining star in dark days like these. So ol Jason "I'm Hard" Bruce Lee was carrying a knife but little did he know what ol Tommy had tucked in his trousers. I bet you sent the pikey scurrying like wee little winky before he cut your jacobs off. Either way I'm glad you didn;t lose him like a set of car keys. A little reckless perhaps hey! Now no need to be polite ol gary. This is the Raimondstertjie- the only man who could illuminate the grey skies of Oxford with his presence. Nice one bruva. With love from Taipei

Good man Giulia. We need more like you in the world today. Word of warning to others though be carefull of not falling foul of the law on false imprisonment. Like the 64 year old who was treated atroshiously by the police after holding a youth who had ben part of a terror campaign and had tresspassed in the mans garden. He should be applauded not pillaried. Well Done both of you, keep up the public spiritedness.
