Traffic was gridlocked this morning north of Oxford as thousands of drivers headed for the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace.

During the rush-hour, traffic was at a standstill on the A44 approaching Woodstock, and an accident on A34 northbound just after the Peartree interchange added to the congestion.

A vehicle overturned and shed fuel, contributing to the long delays and traffic tailed back to the Abingdon North turn. Drivers also faced delays on the A420 and A40.

Royalty and celebrities will be joining the expected 138,000 visitors descending on the palace for the 50th anniversary Game Fair.

The event, which continues over the weekend, is the world's biggest sports exhibition and the national event for 50,000 owners of rural properties represented by the Country Landowners' Association.

Tomorrow, the Duke of Edinburgh will be popping in to tour the show and also present long service awards to gamekeepers.

Among the many celebrities expected to attend are Elaine Page and Bernard Cribbins, who have set their sights on raising money for The Children's Trust in a charity clay pigeon shoot.

Im not sure which part of my extended journey to work was my favourite.
maybe while trying to find a traffic report on the radio, I was able to listen to the inane rambling on Fox

Nice of them to block off a lane on the A44, which they could have put a sign up letting local traffic down i.e. those of us who were trying to get to work and NOT going to the fair!

I feel sorry for the local businesses who have potentially lost 100+ man hours due to the poor signposting for non-CLA traffic!

Businesses in Kidlington (Langford Locks) received letters warning about excessive traffic. Drove from Witney at 8.17 am down the A40 thru Cassington to Rutten Lane, straight across thru Yarnton, back of Kidlington thru to Langford Locks - a doddle! Arrived at work 8.45 a.m. Only gripe was the queue jumpers on the A40 as the dual carriageway goes down to one lane. How ignorant are they! Now will the journey home tonight be quite as easy???!!!

A 15 minute journey took 1 hour 10 minutes!! Why should the event organisers be allowed to get away with this? My petrol, my time - their profits.....

Agree! My 25 minute journey took 1 hour 30 mins, and I'm guessing I won't be allowed free entry into the park for an hour either, despite it being a public right of way through the back gate!

It wouldn't have been hard to put a sign up allowing local traffic to use the RH lanes!

The Gamefair was advertised enough... why did local traffic not avoid area as Vronx did? There are plenty of back ways that are clear. Nice to see that people were so concerned about catching up on the work that they missed, that they had time to log in here?

And yes, the public rights of way are still open but the footpaths do not go near where the Game Fair is.

While some companies have lost man hours, other companies takings are up due to the extra tourists, you win some...

BTW, I am not in anyway associated with the Gamefair and due to where i live will be inconvenienced more than most for all three days not just today getting to work and back. BUT it is only once every four years!

The CLA organisers may have been unlucky with the incidents on the A34 but any fool could predict trafic problems on a peak holiday wekend and with long-scheduled road works in th area. Quoting a journey time to the Game Fair site of 20 minutes from Oxford or 1.5 hours from London is either naive or provocative or just plain stupid.

It was exactly the same last year, they did not learn, this makes them stupid as we all learn as we go. I would put all the cars wanting to get into the car park on the cycle track and let them queue, leaving the dual carrageway for the normal traffic. Cyclists can go on the other side of the road.

Vronx, What speed? 14.5miles through four 30MPH Zones in 28mins I THINK NOT!

Yes this event was advertised on the Matrix signs this week on the A34,

Southbound @ Newbury!!!!!
Is it just me????? Why Southbound?????

Sorrel, Bladon says...

Zimmer - my maths reckons that you can do 15 miles all the way at 30MPH in half an hour?

There was no/little traffic on the A40 at the time Vronx went through this morning so this was perfectly possible without breaking any speed limits.

It's not illegal to do 70mph on the A40 dual carriageway LOL and 60mph on other A roads (as if ... too many bends). Still when you have a nippy little sportster like mine why hang about!!!

Good old (hmm fifties feel like 30...) girl Vronx, I can see you, wave to the turquoise MX5!! LOL and 2 fingers to all the other ******* whingers about the Game Fair - I would go but HATE crowds and traffic queues - and now faced with a dilemma - which way to go home!! Charlbury, A40, oh the choice. There have been plenty of warnings to the locals and non locals - we're in England, queues are the norm aren't they - just turn up the volume and carry plenty of provisions, and a bag to clear up after yourself.

The CLA and Blenheim Palce organisation, coupled with that of the incopmetent and absent police was appalling.
TVP - You are all useless.
Duke - useless old f%rt
OCC- incompetents
CLA - loads of uselss toss pots.

Listened to Jack FM.
Avoided the area.
Took D-tours.
No problem.
Moral of the story - listen to local radio and don't follow the crowd. Life is for living not sitting in traffic.

Barbara Dickens, Rickmansworth says...

Traffic control was non-existant. Needed motorbike police with radios at roundabouts managing traffic plus local traffic only lanes just like at Badminton Horse Trials. CLA website says it all - one of the FAQs is 'where can I land my plane'.

L.L., wolvercote says...
7:08pm Sun 27 Jul 08

Nobody here has given any thought to the knock on effect on buses. Wolvercote in particular was in effect entirely cut off from the no 6 for hours - as the queue out of Oxford north blocked the entire Woodstock road for hours. And nobody bothered warning Wolvercote about the traffic as apparently Kidlington was warned.
