Cameron calls for General Election

Tory leader and Witney MP David Cameron today urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown to call a General Election in the wake of Labour's disastrous Glasgow East by-election defeat .

He said: "I think we need change in this country."

The loss of Glasgow East at the hands of the SNP will spark panic among the party's MPs and cast fresh doubt over the Prime Minister's future.

The seat had been one of Labour's safest with a majority of more than 13,500, but a massive swing of over 22% saw the nationalists secure it by a margin of 365.

If the performance was repeated at a general election, Mr Brown and a slew of Cabinet ministers would be kicked out of the Commons.

Of course Cameron is calling for Brown to go and of course if this type of swing was reflected in a General Election Brown et al would lose their seats..... but when has the results of a by-election ever reflected a General Election? The answer is quite simply NEVER..... this is nothing but boulder hype to fill the columns of the OM. I realise that with Cameron being an Oxfordshire MP some of his comments are worth reporting howver why does the OM feel the need to pring every one word he utters! A bit of Brown-nosing if you ask me!

Regardless of whether it is Mr Cameron, Mr Clegg, the press or the public asking for a general election to be called, it makes no matter. A general election is the only way that the Labour Party, and Gordon Brown, will find out what the British public really thinks, wants and needs. Gordon Brown (who was not elected) is hanging on by his fingernails as the country falls apart around him and his party, and this demonstrates nothing short of absolute contempt for the British people. Call a general election now and let us have our say!!

Actually Becky, Gordon Brown was elected as an MP and then elected by Labour party people as leader of the party. Living in Witney you couldn't have voted any more for Tony Blair than you did Gordon Brown.

But I agree that it's time for Labour to go.

There is no-one in British politics who is capable of leading the country and doing what will be very unpopular with some people and other nations in order to bring the UK back to the fore.

We need a referendum on Europe. We need to support our farmers and not bend over for the EU. We need more support and less red tape for businesses and we need to get away from the USA.

No party has the balls to do what is required.

Maybe it's time for a dictator?

There is no credible opposistion to Labour in this country, MP's and government are some of the biggest freeloaders we support.

I'm with Ed Oxford that we need some politicians who put securing the country over cheating expenses, sh*gging cheeky girls or jumping on any popular bandwagon to look credible.

Lets have some decisive tough politicians - we need these people to make decisions which may be unpopular but at least to have the conviction to do it. Ken Livingston had that conviction, Gwyneth Dunwoody had that conviction. Spineless PR puppets like Cameron do not have it, and if he does win the next election we will see what a fraud he and the other candidates are.

Alan, businesses keep you in a job (assuming you're not on benefits?) and keep the economy healthy. Small businesses are the lifeblood of the UK economy, and I want less red tape for them to thrive.

Tony; if you think the Lib Dems will do any better that the Laboservative party then you're misguided. I was a LD member for many years.

They have no chance of winning nationally, so we're stuck with Labour and Tory for ever.

Is it any wonder why British people are so apathetic about politics? The expenses cover-up debarcle only goes to show they don't want the gravy train to stop!

Given the wage differentials between shopfloor and corporate penpusher, the only thing businesses do is allow lots of fat bloated greedy bastards to line their own pockets whilst telling everybody else to tighten their belts.

It is little wonder that a life on the dole is considered (by some) preferable.

I thought most small businesses had been bought up by conglomerates any. Looking at most high streets would confirm that opinion. I think reining in corporate expansionism rather than encouraging it would be a better move.

Not strictly true - people who voted Labour in the last general election did so knowing that, at the time, Tony Blair was leader of the party; therefore effectively voting for him even if the cross in the ballet slip didn't actually go against his name.

As far as I'm concerned, Gordon Brown is not our primeminister, as he never had the balls to call a general election, so was never "actually" voted in!

At least even John Major called a general election!

Is it not odd that the SNP - Scotish Nationolist Party is fine - although they want independance - But the British Nationalist Party is always portraied by the media as being rascist . WE want a Nationolist government - VOTE BNP .
