Campaigners opposing plans to build an eco-town near Bicester took their protest to Parliament today.

Thousands of protesters held up banners and placards fighting plans for eco-towns around the country, including Weston Otmoor near Weston-on-the-Green.

Members of the Weston Front joined forces with other campaign groups to press their case to Housing Minister Caroline Flint.

Group founder Tony Henman said: "It was hectic, but went very well. The turnout was good.

"Caroline Flint has always said so-called eco-towns would not be built on Green Belt, so Weston Otmoor fails her own criteria. The proposal for Weston Otmoor is a clear example of Government policy that has not been thought through in reality."

Developer Parkridge wants to build on 800 acres of farmland close to the A34/M40 junction.

Weston Otmoor is one of 15 eco-towns already on the Government's shortlist, which will be narrowed down to 10 in October.

Consultation on the schemes ends on July 18.

A number of high profile figures have added their support to protests against the schemes, with Midsomer Murders star John Nettles, Dame Judi Dench and author Jilly Cooper fighting the development of Middle Quinton, near Stratford-upon-Avon.

Ms Flint said: "Eco-towns are a new concept in England and we know that they invoke strong opinions. That's why the consultation process is so important.

"However, our initial research among the general public shows clear support."

It would be nice to have a few more local C grade celebrities protecting the land from 'investors'.

Better yet would be MPs willing to lend us a hand.

The "research" Ms Flint refers to is a YouGov poll which simply asked 1321 people who claimed to have heard of the term eco-town;

"To what extent do you support or oppose .... The development of Eco-towns in England".

Hard not to support "eco" things if you are told nothing about the actual proposals. I am surprised she didn't get 100% in favour.

Let's see a poll asking the following for something to compare with:

"To what extent do you support our policy to build large housing estates on green field, green belt land, miles from existing towns, in locations where they are opposed by local residents and local government, and don't fit in with regional planning strategies?"

"To what extent do you think environmental groups are correct when they say that our plans for eco-towns are in no way environmentally sound?"

"To what extent do you believe that this government can be trusted to undertake genuine consultation on eco-towns rather than obscuring the real issues through undertaking biased surveys and covering the issues in spin and misleading press statements?"

So who are the greenbelt gatekeepers in Oxfordshire?

Care to name them and suggest modes of police enquiry?

I have been following this situation since I stumbled across the first article which aired the concerns of Mr. Nettles & Ms. Dench.

I agree with their concern over these "eco-towns." Our government, in it's wisdom, started building low income housing in our inner cities in the 60s. Within 20 years they became slums. In the 90s they were being torn down. I agree with Mr. Nettles that they will turn into rat infested eye sores within 20 years!

What the government isn't saying is that the people who will reside in these "eco-towns" will be new immigrants & illegals, not native born citizens!

All I can say is don't allow your government to steam roller over your cival liberties & your right to decide, through legal aveunes, how to protect your homes & towns from crime & destruction of your quality of life for you & your children!
