Students at Oxford Brookes University are campaigning against the demolition of one of the city's biggest live music venues.

The university is planning to redesign its Gipsy Lane campus, but the proposed revamp has worried students because it involves the demolition of the students' union, the Helena Kennedy Student Centre.

The university has pledged to rebuild student facilities on the site of the former Darcy building, but there is no guarantee the replacement building will include a large concert hall.

Students' union president Antoinette Kyuchukovacrct said students were alarmed by the proposals for the revamp, which will provide a replacement student union by 2012.

She said: "The student union venue has hosted lots of famous bands over the years for public gigs, including groups like Travis and Pendulum.

"Students do not want to lose this facility because of the campus redevelopment and I have already received more than 1,000 written responses regarding the venue.

"Students are on holiday at the moment, but I know they are opposed to these plans and I am gathering their responses by email.

"The message is coming through very strongly that the student experience here at Oxford Brookes would be far worse if students didn't have this space."

University deputy vice-chancellor Rex Knight said: "The university will shortly release its plans for a major new student centre on its Gipsy Lane site.

"It has been more than three years in the planning and will transform the services we provide for our students."

The Helena Kennedy Centre was a dump with awful acoustics.

The HK centre is lacking in any form of atmosphere and indeed has really bad acoustics. A sensible idea would be for Brookes to actually invest in a good quality venue that would benefit students, staff and the community. Will they do it? Unlikely!

The Brookes Union was effectively made redundant as a music venue when the Zodiac was re-modelled last year. Very few bands have played there since. A shame - the acoustics may not have been great, but they were better than the downstairs venue at the Carling Academy.

i actually liked the brookes venue, if someoine on the mixing desk knew what they were doing the sound was good. the carling academy has absolutely no atmosphere at all now, all they want to do is sell drinks otherwise why would you have bars so close to the stage? the upstairs loo's had no investment at all and the cost of gigs went up!! brookes could certainly have a money spinner on their hands if they perhaps invested in a promotions team.

Beg to differ.

Last time I was in the Campus, the Helena Kennedy Centre was within the Headington Hall Locus?

Maybe it has moved?

Please advise and or confirm. Thank You.

The Students' Union at Brookes is going to be re-located across the road on Gipsy Lane campus. The SU will share a building with the Library and other University run services. While this will give potentially better visibility of the SU to students, there is a threat that the SU will use its core strenghts - its own social space for music, performance, societies, volunteers and training. It is the safest students only venue in Oxfordshire! The venue makes this Union so valuable and unique, and without it students don't believe it would really feel like a student space. Hence we are lobbying the university to ensure that students are given the social provision they need from their union. Meanwhile Helena Kennedy centre (where it is currently) will be demolished.
