Jewish women in Oxford will be able to fulfil a key part of their faith for the first time in hundreds of years, following the construction of a ritual bath.

It is the first time the city has had a so-called mikvah bath, since medieval times.

The bathing pool is used by Jewish women to immerse themselves in once a month after menstruation.

The opening of the Slager Family Mikvah, at Oxford Chabad House, in Cowley Road, was so significant to the Jewish community, that the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yona Metzger, flew in from the Middle East for the opening ceremony, on Thursday. It was the rabbi's first visit to Oxford.

Mr Metzger said: "This is an historic and spiritual moment for the Jewish people here.

"The history of the Jews in Oxford was very bad 800 years ago when they were hated and persecuted just because they were Jews.

"Now the Jewish people have a right to be here, and can build a mikvah and use it, without disturbing their neighbours."

Work on the mikvah, which consists of two marble bathrooms, started in 2005, and was finished last month.

Rabbi Eli Brackman, who moved to Oxford in 2001, had been trying to get a mikvah in the city since his arrival.

He said: "The mikvah has particular focus on the family.

"It emphasises the importance of the family in Jewish tradition, more than prayer, worship or other practices."

Mr Brackman said: "It is extremely important for us, as a young and growing community.

"It is a sign that the community is looking forward."

Up to 30 women will use the bath each month.

Clipping the coin was and still is a serious offence.

It's called Interest these days.

The ancient forbears of the Hebrews were such an atrocious lot that God had to personally appear to chastise them,or so the myth goes.

Of course those people bear little relation to these moder Eurasian Jews, true Semites heard the second and third instalments and became Christian and Muslim.

Never trust those claiming ancesral memory, especially when it conflicts with national history.

Good luck with your plunge pool,i do wonder if it will ever be used.

I have no clue what Mr. Ison's comment has to do with this article.

Congratulations to the Oxford Jewish Community on the opening of the new Mikvah. It is nice to see the community growing and being enriched. It benefits all of us!

That's a long way to travel for a douche.

In England the ducking-stool fell out of use some centuries past only to be seized upon by this recent US administration.

They call it waterboarding but it is apparently not a torture, simply a pastime for POW.

The fruits of the Iraq invasion don't seem to be enjoyed by those without food or water in occupied Palestine, whilst over the wall in what some claim Israel they are rolling in it.

I guess exclusive communities are that way.

In England the days of robber barons leaving their castles to pillage from the countryside were almost history.

The Tories sought to emulate those people and the Labour party originally sought to thwart them.

These days we have an increasingly one party state where like in the Soviet or indeed South Africa and Israel the party hives off the wealth for themselves leaving nout for the masses.

The EU increasingly is used as a means of controlling the lives or rather the wealth of the various nations citizens,a far cry from it's remit as a trading block.

They do trade in people however as witnessed by the New Labour immigration policy, and soon they will trade in carbon.

Thanks to those who see a future in the brokerage of the imaginary.

The Irish said NO but Brown and Sarkozy say Yes so maybe the Mikvah can be hired out to duck those contemptuous of the will of the people.

By the people i mean all people and not as a code word for a chosen few.

Oy,oy!

These sheep dip plans are just the ticket for our womens.

Seriously though it looks uninviting,no Jewess worth her salt is going to want to even put a toe in that abomination.

Some nice circular plunge pools are available, possibly with heating and bubbles.

Beasts walking on two legs such as Japanese Monkeys enjoy better than that thrifty offering.

"The bathing pool is used by Jewish women to immerse themselves in once a month after menstruation."

This seems a very strange idea, and hardly a necessity if they have managed without it for so long. Presumably the unfortunate women will not always be observed by men in old-fashioned European hats.
