Skateboarders were celebrating last night after councillors approved plans for a £300,000 skatepark in Cowley.
Oxford City Council strategic development control committee gave the thumbs up for the scheme despite objections from residents.
Neighbours at the proposed park facility, which will be built at Cowley Marsh recreation ground, had complained at possible noise, parking and environmental issues.
But 10 out of 11 councillors felt the Oxford Wheels Projects plans took the concerns into account and voted in favour of the park.
Project organisers have said will now attempt to negotiate a lease on the site from Oxford City Council.
If negotiations are successful up to 30 people will be able to skate at the park on a series of ramps and jumps.
Jack Richens, executive member of Oxford Wheels Projects, said: "I am slightly stunned. I was not expecting approval at all. I speechless.
"This is the first time we have really been off the starting blocks. Everyone is over the moon."
Campaigners against park admitted their disappointment at the decision, which was made in line with council officers recommendations.
A 1.8m fence will help to block any noise from the park, which could be open from 10am until 9.30pm on weekdays and 9am to 9.30pm at weekends.
A temporary skatepark has been open in Meadow Lane, East Oxford, for ten years.
