Eight environmental campaigners have blockaded a power station in a protest against climate change this morning.

Two women and six men - all from Oxford - used bike locks to close the entrance to the coal-powered Aberthaw Power Station in Barry, South Wales, at 7.30am.

A spokesman for the group, called Oxford Automonists, said the campaigners were holding a sit-down protest, blockading the entrance and refusing to move.

The power station is owned by RWE npower, which also runs Didcot Power Station.

Campaigner Deborah Locke, 30, of Oxford, said: "Climate change is the biggest issue of our time and we all have the power to take action to halt climate change."

The protesters said they aimed to continue disrupting work at the power station for as long as possible.

They'd better get back to a Post Office before 5pm of else they won't be able to collect their giros.

How annoying that we're PAYING these people benefits to waste the time of people that work hard and contribute to society. I assume none of them use electricity as due to the nature of the National Grid they will use some power from this power station, and that would be hypocritical - or is environmentalism only about telling others what to do, not making sacrifices yourself?

Before slating anybody who has a voice and wishes to use it - think before you speak. These people strongly believe in something, surely if you suddenly found yourself feeling quite as strong about an issue close to you, you would do something? If not, then sit back, shut up and let those who do act and speak up carry on.

..Or how about they were trying to raise awareness about one of the biggest issues in our society at the moment? Most climate scientists agree that a huge amount of reduction in emissions needs to happen NOW, these people are simply trying to do something to benefit our lives and our future. But go ahead and call them tossers, it really shows compassion for progression.

I think that we are already aware that global walming is taking place i don't see how a load of hippy's are going to make any difference. These powerstations are doing the best they can to cut emmisions and still supply the british public with electricity, investing millions in new technologies to reduce emmissions. The fights with the government.

Raise awareness? I'm not sure it's possible for awareness to be any higher, short of making us stop for "10 minutes' guilt" every hour on the hour.

Well if we are so **** aware about climate change, why the **** is everyone still consuming fossil fuels? If you're still not using green energy providers/still on The Grid, still eating food imported from all over the world, still driving a car, still flying (need I go on?), then people will feel compelled to take direct action. Even doing the above but not calling on sefish bastards to do the same makes us responsible. These people are trying to save your children/
grandchidren's ****. The time to act is NOW. If we don't, it will trigger a series of climatic positive feedbacks making it unstoppable. Stop whining about a few people lying in the road and join them, or have the meltdown on this planet on your conscience.

Why is there an assumption that these protesters are on benefits? Most of the protesters I know are self employed or work part time, usually within the caring professions. They are people who care enough about society to spend their free time campaigning, unlike the majority of the population who just spend their time off lazing around in front of the tv

It is idiotic to say "we all have the power to take action to halt climate change" and then demonstrate this by locking the gates of a power station with bicycle padlocks.

nuclear power the way foward the sooner we relise this the sooner we can start producing electricity which is not contributing to global warming. O the same protestors will protest agains this. There hypicrits. Eco sorces simply can't provide the nation with electricity
