Battle to safeguard lakes goes on

Radley Parish Council is pushing ahead with its fight for town green status for Thrupp and Bullfield lakes despite RWE npower suspending its dumping plans.

The energy company last week said it was putting plans to dump spent fuel ash from Didcot Power Station into Thrupp on hold because of a new scheme to recycle the waste.

Campaigners fighting the dumping plans suffered a blow when their bid to get the area awarded town green status was rejected.

But the parish council is pressing ahead with an appeal against Oxfordshire County Council's decision.

If the parish loses, it faces a £40,000 bill which campaign group Save Radley Lakes is currently fundraising for.

Parish council chairman Jennie Standen said: "The statement that npower put out was great but it was only deferral.

"It doesn't mean that they have cancelled their plans - they could come back at any time should they find that their recycling is inadequate to do with output.

"We still feel that the lakes need the protection of becoming a town green so we would still like to go ahead. We are absolutely certain, having taken legal advice, that there were errors in the inspector's report. We feel it did not reflect the evidence that was given and we do wish to contest the decision."

A survey of Radley residents found that 80 per cent of those who replied supported the move to seek a judicial review of the county council decision.

Where is the Town Council in this action? It is Abingdon's Town Green after all!

Answer to Ms Chief: not sure that the Town Council has much jurisdiction as said lake comes wihin the Parish of Radley, and it is their business. However they do have a lot of the townspeople as supporters and keeping the lake as it is (with room for improvements) is in all of our interests, it is an amenity to everyone. Oh that the county council had thought along those lines too, surely they do not want yet another eyesore in the county, much as we see just a few kilometers north of the city of Oxford near the A34 and the railway line en route to Birmingham, there are a lot more shabby areas which could with a clean up as well. Get to it Oxfordshire and start now, it's in our children's and grandchildren's future interest an good health.

Ms Chief has a point.

The Town Green Inspector QC concluded, from the evidence submitted at the Public Inquiry, that Abingdon (not Radley) is the locality that would have, in law, "owned" the lakes, had they become a town green. This means that Abingdon Town Council does indeed have a strong legal standing in the matter, one that is arguably greater than Radley Parish Council's.

Parish councils are a waste of time and money anyways.. we do not need 3 tiers of goverment (4 if you include westminster)

The time to abolish them is long overdue.
