More than 1,000 homes were without electricity in Kidlington last night after power lines came down in The Moors area of the village at about 11.30pm.

Homes in Hampton Poyle are also affected.

Southern Electric engineers have been working through the night to sort out the problem.

But 200 remain without power and three generators are currently on their way to the scene to help with the situation.

Southern Electric spokesman Morven Smith apologised for the disruption to residents.

She told the Oxford Mail it was too early to tell what caused the damage to the electricity wires and that the company's main priority was to restore power to homes.

She said: "Engineers are working on the scene at the moment. There will be extensive repairs needed."
