Campaigners launched an appeal at the weekend to raise funds to support further legal action to protect Radley Lakes from being turned into an ash dump.

More than £4,000 was raised at the event at the Guildhall, in Abbey Close, Abingdon, to help fund and support a judicial review of Oxfordshire County Council's recent decision not to register land around Thrupp and Bullfield Lakes at Radley as a town or village green.

About 200 people including MP Evan Harris and representatives from the Conservatives, the Labour party and the Green party, showed their support on Saturdayfeb 9.

The group hopes to stop Didcot Power Station from going ahead with its plans to dump ash in the lakes.

Lynda Pasquire, of Save Radley Lakes, said: "From what has been said today, the general view of the public is that npower were completely mad to consider doing this and there ought to be ways of stopping them."

Save Radley Lakes has vowed to carry on its battle and hopes a motion due to go before Oxford City Council on February 18, will gain support for the campaign.

Labour parliamentary candidate for Oxford West and Abingdon Richard Stevens said: "It's not too late to change direction, and we as a community must urge the county council and RWE npower to think again."

ITS NOT A TOWN GREEN AND NEVER WILL BE ONE WHILE ITS TREATED AS A RUBBISH TIP BY ITS RESIDENTS... GET OVER IT

I think that 'DONKEYS, FIELD' must be getting confused with the area nearby that Npower has already filled with ash. It's littered with burnt out cars. The surviving lakes are pretty clean and tidy. People respect them. It seems that Npower doesn't respect anything very much, except its profits.

DONKEYS, FIELD - My friends and I went litter picking down there and we were told later that we rubbish because the Town Green Inspector would have taken that as evidence of use! NPower have dumped enough ash in Radley to make thousands of breeze blocks and wasted a valuable resource because they are blinkered, dogmatic and a corporate bully - They said "We are in the business of Generating Electricity not selling Ash". They have had to sell their ash for the last three years, and proved what we knew all along - They could recycle if they really tried.

Get over it? No way. This will run and run probably until 2012 when the Power Station closes.

DONKEYS.FIELD is sort of right, given that the current residents of Thrupp Lake are npower, and "as a rubbish dump" is EXACTLY how they treat the place!

So how will "a motion due to go before Oxford City Council on February 18, gain support for the campaign", when the planning authority is Oxfordshire County Council, the lakes are in the Vale of White Horse and the Power Station in South Oxfordshire? Is the City Council turning into a debating chamber, the towns answer to the Oxford Union perhaps? Discussing their finanaces might be more profitable.

Sorry, just worked out the connection, its the electricity. N Power supply the power so that the City Council are not kept in the dark - so some of the ash belongs to the City Council. Yes that must be it.

Oxford City, Kennington Parish, Radley Parish and Abingdon Town and Vale of White Horse District Councils are all taking an interest, because residents of all of these have an interest in Radley Lakes. It's a pity Didcot Power station is so outmoded that they are only just learning how to sell ash at a profit. As for Oxfordshire County Council, words fail me.

Ian wants to know what good Oxford City Council's motion will do. Well, it might encourage people who live in the City of Oxford to look at what is going on on their doorsteps - and yes he is right - the residents of Oxford do have some ownership of the Ash and so perhaps they should have a say in its method of disposal!

The Oxford Time singularly fails to report the Radley Lakes Issues for some reason, yet it will report trivia from outside the County, but not this issue which is a landmark case in the little man against big business.

NPower have been shown to be completely out of touch with the population. They tried to get the authorities to believe that the Power Station might close down if they didn't dump their ash, and it worked with the Oxfordshire County Council. It hasn't worked with the rest of the community!
