When 10-year-old Jack Constant was told by his mother Lesley that she was seriously ill with cancer he decided something should be done to help find a cure for the disease.

With the help of his friends in year six at Harwell Primary School, he set about organising a stall at the school's Christmas fayre.

The children made decorations and gifts and the big attraction was an electric buzzer challenge that most people failed - but the stall proved a big success and raised more than £200 for Cancer Research UK.

The whole fayre raised £1,400 for school funds.

Nicola Hunter, the charity's area volunteer manager, received a cheque at a ceremony at the school and thanked Jack, his friends and the people who supported the stall.

Headteacher Peter Cansell said: "Mrs Constant, who is now in remission, was the third mother in the school in recent years to suffer from breast cancer and so it is something very close to the hearts of the young children."
