Cathedral hosts diamond celebration

Couples who share their 60th wedding anniversary next month with The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, are being sought by the Bishop of Oxford.

The Royal couple, right, will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Tuesday, November 20.

To mark the occasion, the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev John Pritchard, is inviting other couples married on the same day to attend a special service at Christ Church Cathedral.

Sarah Meyrick, the spokesman for the Diocese of Oxford, said: "This service will be a wonderful occasion. The bishop will be preaching, and the service of Evening Prayer is open to everyone.

"But the cathedral is extending a special welcome to Oxfordshire couples who got married on November 20, 1947, and share the same wedding anniversary.

"We hope as many as possible will be able to come and share the event."

The Royal wedding was a relatively simple affair, as Britain was still recovering from the Second World War, and Princess Elizabeth had to collect clothing coupons for her dress, like any other bride.

The then Royal Navy Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece.
