OLDER people are being offered the chance to sign up for a month's worth of cheap swimming at council leisure centres.

The offer applies to participating centres in the south Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse areas including the Didcot Wave and the White Horse Leisure Centre in Abingdon.

Residents aged 60 and over can swim as many times as they like in a month for £5.

Would-be swimmers need to register for the offer by visiting the GO Active Gold website or by calling 01235 422219 before September 27.

Once they have received confirmation they can visit the participating leisure centres throughout September with the month-long offer starting from the date of the first swim.

Alice Badcock, cabinet member for leisure at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “Swimming is fun and a great way to get active and keep healthy.

"This is a fantastic offer - for less than the cost of two sessions, people can swim as many times as they want during the month and everyone who signs up get free guest passes, so friends and family can join too.”

The scheme is part of the district councils’ GO Active Gold programme, funded by Sport England, which aims to increase health and well-being among people aged 60 and over living in rural areas. Lynn Lloyd, cabinet member for leisure at South Oxfordshire District Council, said the scheme has helped thousands of older people.
