TEENAGERS helped boost relations between police and West Oxfordshire's LGBTQ+ community with two successful events.

Young volunteers undertaking a National Citizen Service programme held a Coffee with a Cop meet and greet at Witney Methodist Church on Wednesday.

Six police officers attended throughout the day along with 20 guests, including representatives from Support U, an LGBTQ+ support group.

Anna O'Sullivan, 16, who helped organise the event, said: "Most people stayed for the whole three hours and got a chance to speak to different police officers and each other, and everybody picked up a lot of leaflets and said they enjoyed it.

"It was much more successful than we expected and we're all very happy with how the rest of the week turned out too."

The group of eight also ran a stall at both days of last weekend's Witney Music Festival, offering a range of activities including 'Guess the Teddy', cake sale and tombola.

An 'information table' was set up for festival-goers to pick up a range of leaflets and chat about LGBTQ+ issues.

Miss O'Sullivan said: "We also had a couple of people come over just to chat and air some queries and that was definitely interesting too.

"There wasn't much in terms of negative responses."

The group is working with Jake Acock, district councillor for Ascott and Shipton, to bring back Witney Pride Festival, with a date earmarked for June 2019.

The National Citizen Service is a four-week voluntary personal and social development programme for 15-17-year-olds.
