WOULD-BE web experts and coders can sign up for a free fortnight of digital learning sessions at Oxfordshire County Council libraries.

Following the launch yesterday children aged between eight and 13 can earn a selection of badges for taking part in a variety of projects in the council’s Digital Summer programme – from making a birthday card using website design skills to programming a robot.

People can call in at any of the county’s 43 libraries for learning sessions or they work with a friend or family member to try out coding, animation, micro:bits, 3D design and more.

Librarian Mark Sutcliffe, who is helping to organise the project said: “The aim is for children to learn some fun digital making skills by following step-by-step projects, earning digital badges in the process to inspire them.”

Badges up for grabs include Robot Engineer, Scratch Coder, 3D Designers, Micro:bit Star, Web Hero and the Maker Pioneer badge for those who teach someone else.

Young scientists can also visit one of the following libraries for special events where they can get even more badges for programming and making LED cards.

The County Library in the Westgate Centre is running sessions daily until Monday, September 3.

The library was revamped to coincide with the refurbishment of the Westgate Centre last year.

Other sessions are taking place at branch libraries, including at Summertown Library today.
