MARCUS Browne is looking for Oxford United to kick on tomorrow after helping them set the right standards for the first time this season in midweek.

The West Ham United loanee admitted he had been watching his goal on a loop since Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory against Coventry City.

And the man-of-the-match display on his first senior start pushed his claims to keep the shirt when the U’s visit Portsmouth tomorrow.

That was strengthened with the news Ricky Holmes is a doubt for the game due to a back injury.

But Browne knows whoever plays, United need to replicate their midweek display to stand a chance of getting off the mark in Sky Bet League One at the third attempt.

“I think it (the form) needed a bit of a turn after two disappointing defeats, but the boys have applied themselves really well and hopefully it’s the start of a good run,” he said.

“That sets the tone for us, we played really well and set high standards.

“Now it’s about maintaining those and taking them into every game.”

Browne was signed to increase United’s attacking options, but the 20-year-old admitted he was as surprised as anyone to open his goalscoring account in senior football with a header.

He said: “I can’t even remember the last time I scored one.

“I’ve watched the goal on repeat since I finished the game and I was buzzing off it. I’m really happy.”

The forward came off after 63 minutes against Coventry as he works towards full fitness.

But with United monitoring Holmes’s fitness after undergoing a planned injection in his back on Wednesday, plus James Henry suffering from a dead leg, Browne could be handed his first league start.

And the thought of playing at Fratton Park certainly appeals.

He said: “I relish the opportunity to play in front of loads of people.

“They have big crowds there so it will be a good opportunity for me to express myself and I buzz off that.

“Portsmouth make it hard for any team to go there and play well.

“It will be a very good test

for us, but I think we’ll go

there and do well – as long as we apply ourselves in the right manner.”
