A GLITZY revamp for the oldest pub in the village.

Botley's oldest pub was subject to a fresh lick of paint and shiny new interiors, giving it the second facelift in just seven years to 'enable it to keep up with the ever-growing development of the district'.

The Carpenters Arms, which was known for clinking glasses and popular burgers, was in the hands of builders and other craftsman for just over a month before crowds were able to spill back in and enjoy the new layout.

In May 1969, landlord Frank Morris said: "Everything you see here is completely new," as he pointed with pride to the enlarged and remodelled lounge and bar, which he described as perfect and an 'excellent meeting place for professionals socially and informally'.

Locals would struggle to enjoy a pint in the pub now: despite anger from regulars who said they weren't loving the idea of golden arches becoming part of Botley's skyline with 'McNo!' banners in protest – the pub was later converted into into a branch of McDonald's.
