COWLEY Road is many things to many people, and it's constantly morphing.
Pictured here is one incarnation of the always-interesting and cosmopolitan street in 1979.
Taken from an article in the Oxford Mail from that year, this photo illustrates a report looking at what Cowley Road meant to its residents and visitors some 40 years ago.
The piece describes Cowley Road as 'a delightful jumble of humanity' - which sounds about right.
And it dates back to the twelfth century, when little else existed there other than a hospital erected by the Knights Templar.
Much later, a great deal of building work went on in the 19th century between the Plain and Church Cowley, and thus began the journey to the Cowley Road we know and love today.
