A PIONEERING school which is the only one of its kind in the UK has celebrated stellar results.

Senior school pupils at the Europa School in Culham, near Abingdon, recorded an average mark of 81.8 per cent in their European Baccalaureate exams.

The qualification requires students to study between 10 and 14 subjects and be fully bilingual two languages.

It is studied by students aged 16-18 and is only offered at accredited 'European schools'.

There are just 14 of these across the continent and Europa is the only one in the UK, having set up on the same site of The European School, which closed in August 2017.

The latter school opened in 1978 and was the country's first accredited European school, but closed after funding was pulled by the European Commission.

All-through state school the Europa was set up under the free schools programme to follow in its predecessor's footsteps, opening in 2012.

Sutdents celebrated their results by burying a time capsule at a special ceremony attended by Layla Moran MP.

Year 6 pupils also gained more than 80 per cent in SATs exams, and the majority exceeded national averages in several core subjects.

Andrew Parker, chair of governors at the school, said: "Despite all the uncertainties created by Brexit, these young students are a shining example of educational success in the widest sense."
