TWO major construction schemes in Oxford have been instrumental in winning health and safety awards.

Ongoing works at Balliol College and Keble College – where BAM Construction is delivering a student accommodation scheme for Balliol and similar accommodation together with research spaces and a historic restoration at Keble – have rewarded two of the many sub-contractors working on them.

Both schemes, valued at a combined £90m, helped Hertfordshire-based Goldmax to the South East region safety award in the substructure category, and both schemes featured for Aylesbury-based firm GS Mechanical, which specialises in supplying mechanical and public health services. It won the internal works health and safety section.

BAM’s South East Director Adam Harding said:

“How we co-ordinate the many firms who works for us on our sites, the standards they work to, and how we keep us all safe as well as the public proximate to our works, these are critical factors. We wanted to acknowledge exceptional performance in key parts of our work and that’s what GS Mechanical and Goldmax have demonstrated with their work for us in Oxford.

“We have a collaborative culture which works well for our clients and our supply chain. Good businesses create an atmosphere of open communication. The people who work for us, and how we treat them, are central to our ability to work safely and efficiently.”

BAM employs over 1,200 subcontractors every year, and was chosen to conduct work on the new HB Allen Centre in Banbury Road.

The scheme for Keble College is now in its final stages.
