POLICE have launched a fresh appeal for information about an attempted murder in Abingdon after releasing a 17-year-old suspect.

Thames Valley Police announced this morning it was looking for new leads after releasing the teenage boy under investigation.

A woman in her fifties was walking her dog in woodland near Clifton Drive at about 10.30am on Thursday when she said she was approached by a young man.

The man put his hand over her mouth and stabbed her once in the stomach before fleeing through the woods towards Clifton Drive.

The woman was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where she received treatment.

Her injuries were not life-threatening and she has since been discharged.

The offender is described as a white male in his late teens, approximately 5ft 10ins tall with a slim build.

He was wearing black turn-up denim shorts, a light grey top and white and black trainers. He was also wearing glasses.

Police have increased officer numbers in the area around Boxhill Park while investigations continue.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Ali Driver, of Force CID at Abingdon, said: "I appreciate the concern in the community over this incident, but our officers are making progress in the investigation.

"Over the coming days, you will see increased patrols and enhanced police presence while we continue to investigate.

"Incidents such as this are extremely rare, and while we are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack, I would like to re-assure the community that our investigations remain an absolute priority.

"I am re-appealing to anybody who was in the area between 10am and 11am on Thursday who believes they witnessed the incident, or who recognises the description of the offender to call 101, quoting URN 434 (19/7)."
