EIGHT men were arrested by armed police in connection with conspiracy to commit robbery.

Officers with guns and helicopter support made the arrests in Crescent Road and Bailey Road, Cowley, at about 9.30pm last night.

One witness described seeing officers in the area with 'assault rifles' and 'SWAT gear'.

The men - two aged 44, two aged 32, one aged 38, one aged 63, one aged 35 and one aged 26 - remain in police custody.

In criminal law, a conspiracy is an agreement between two or more people to commit a crime at some time in the future.

Police officers and staff are still in the area carrying out enquiries. Any members of the public with concerns or questions are asked to speak to those on the scene.
