THE whole of Oxford’s largest estate is set to come together to stage a festival to remember.

Leys Festival and Horticultural Show, the biggest event in the Blackbird and Greater Leys calender, is set for a triumphant and sunny return this weekend.

Getting under way in Blackbird Leys Park tomorrow from 11am to 3pm, this year the festival promises stalls, activities, music and dance.

Family-friendly attractions include a petting farm, balloon modelling, a story tent, slime making, bouncy castles and DIY face painting.

The Carterton-based Crocodiles of the World attraction is set to make a special appearance with a few reptilian friends and a clown will be on hand to bring a smile to people’s faces.

Elsewhere live kickboxing, mountain biking and football will entertain the crowds who can also browse craft stalls and meet local good causes.

Blackbird Leys Parish Council, one of the organisers, has purchased gazebos in preparation but it doesn’t appear they will be needed with 27C predicted.

Linda Smith, city councillor for Blackbird Leys, said: “The festival is always a fun-filled opportunity for the whole community to come together and celebrate the very best of Blackbird Leys, welcoming visitors from across Oxford to our beautiful park to enjoy the attractions on offer.

“This will be an action-packed day with delicious food, fantastic music, performances and activities for children and adults. I encourage everyone to come along and experience this vibrant community event for themselves.”

The festival has been organised by Oxford City Council with local schools including The Blackbird Academy Trust and The Oxford Academy.

The Nigerian Community in Oxfordshire and the Oxford Polish Association are also supporting the day with funding provided by the parish council, Green Square Housing, Catalyst Housing and local shop NISA.

Marking National Democracy Week, council officers will also be out in force to spread the importance of registering to vote.

Martin John, electoral services manager, said: “National Democracy Week is all about celebrating the fact that everyone can have a say in the democratic process, and to encourage those who may not be registered to vote to get involved.”
