FOOTBALL fans are gearing up for England’s first foray into the World Cup tomorrow with mixed expectations.

The fate of the Three Lions will play out from 7pm with Tunisia the first opponents, and we went out into Oxford city centre to ask fans for their predictions.

Sam Drewitt, 34, who works at The Oxford Cobbler, predicted a 3-1 win with a double from star man Harry Kane.

But the Littlemore resident believes a quarter final exit for England is likely and is predicting a familiar foe will lift the trophy on July 15.

He said: “I think Germany will win as their team is just so strong. Even their second team is really good.”

Optimism was in shorter supply elsewhere in the Covered Market, with Andrew Hill of John Gowing jewellers believing even a quarter finals appearance is a doubt.

The lifelong Oxford United fan also saw a usual suspect winning in Russia.

He said: “Brazil are going to win – all the best teams play in yellow!”

The national team are without a major trophy in 52 years and most pundits cannot see them progressing further than the quarter finals in Russia.

But some supporters in the city are daring to dream, especially 58-year-old John Irvin, who believes Gareth Southgate's men will emulate the heroes of '66.

Oxford Mail:

He said: “It’s coming home. We’re going to win it.

“I’m a West Ham fan so we won England the World Cup in 1966.

"I was seven years old and it was my first World Cup memory.”

Tom Hammick, 21, is a retail assistant at Oxford United's covered market shop and is equally confident.

He said: “England will win it of course. I think this is the best team we’ve had in a long time.

"I’ve been enjoying watching them, I'm even watching the friendlies which I don’t normally.

“There seems a good atmosphere around the camp, it’s not too serious and quite relaxed.”

Across town Abbas Jaffal, 37, who works at a stall selling falafel on Gloucester Green, was the only person not predicting a comfortable England win against Tunisia.

He said: “I hope England do well but I can’t see it because most of the best teams have experienced players who have played in world cups before.

"This is the first time this England team have played together but Spain, Germany and Brazil have been there before.”

Mr Jaffal, who lives in Oxford but is originally from Lebanon, drew comparisons with England's 0-0 draw with Algeria in 2010, one of the national side's lowest moments.

He said: “I want England to win but I’m thinking it will be like Algeria in 2010 - I'll say maybe 1-0 to England.”
