EVEN drivers used to sitting in long delays at Frideswide Square may have been surprised to learn what caused a hold-up yesterday afternoon.
A duck and her five ducklings had to be shepherded back to the river by passers-by after getting lost near Oxford Station.
The epic journey saw the birds march in formation from Hollybush Row, across Frideswide roundabout and down Botley Road to the river at Osney.
Paul Hayday, 38, was working in his office in King Charles House in Park End Street when he spotted the birds in peril out of the window.
The self-described animal lover rushed out and helped protect the ducks from oncoming traffic before marshalling them along the road.
Accompanied by a band of concerned onlookers, and tourists taking photos, he helped the ducks on their 15 minute journey.
The information systems manager said: "They seemed very determined and knew where they were going.
"At first I tried to get them to the canal but they were having none of it.
"The only time they were flustered was when a dog came the other way under the railway bridge but thankfully we got around it.
He added: "I think we crossed four roads in total including going diagonally across the roundabout, which was interesting.
"I hate to see any animal in distress so had to go out and help.
"There was quite a merry brand of us by the end. The car drivers were happy to stop and let us cross. It's not something that happens very often."
