ENVIRONMENTALLY minded youngsters enjoyed a plastic-free lunch at their school in Bicester this week.
Children and teachers at St Edburg’s Church of England Primary School banned the use of plastics during their lunch hour on Wednesday.
The move was an effort to help reduce the school’s use of single-use plastic and also highlight the impact plastic pollution is having on the environment, particularly the world’s oceans.
Year 5 pupils proudly enjoyed a healthy meal of ham and cheese salad sandwiches and wraps as part of their stand against the environmental scourge.
All single-use plastics such as packaging and throw-away containers were banished.
Staff and children at the school in Pioneer Way were prompted to act after the devastating effects of single-use plastics on the world’s oceans were shown in the BBC’s Blue Planet 2 programme last year.
The show, hosted by David Attenborough, showed how plastic makes its way into the world’s oceans and the harmful, and sometimes fatal, effects it is having on sea creatures, fish and birds.
