CYCLISTS saddled up to cover thousands of miles for charities as the fifth annual Bike Oxford event took to the county’s roads.

Anneliese Dodds, MP for Oxford East and Witney-based County Councillor Suzanne Bartington, Oxfordshire’s Cycling Champion, were among the 1,100 riders to take part in Sunday’s event.

Cyclists of all levels tackled routes of either 25, 50 or 80 miles.

Major beneficiaries included Helen and Douglas House and Ronald McDonald House at Oxford Children’s Hospital with individual riders also raising money for their own causes.

Food stops were organised along the route at Charlbury, Stanton St John and Deddington, and an event village at Oxford University Rugby Football Club showcased local produce.

Organiser Richard Best, CEO of Iconic Cycling Events, said: “The goodwill of all those involved – from sponsors and supporters to food producers - helps us to achieve a positive and lasting impact for active lifestyles and great charities doing some impressive work in the community.”
