OXFORD residents who have passports from other EU countries can get free legal advice about their resident status after Brexit.

An event will take place in the Long Room at Oxford Town Hall on May 31 from 7.30pm. It will give people the chance to ask a lawyer, Matthew Davies, who manages a team of 40 immigration experts, to ask where they will stand legally once the UK leaves the EU.

Graham Jones, chairman of the Oxford Region of the European Movement UK, said: “We’re continually hearing from people born on the continent, some who have been here for decades, who are very worried about their future ten months from now.

“Some are married to British partners and have raised families here, but never saw any reason to renounce their citizenship of the countries of their birth.

“They have contributed their skills to this country, paid their taxes, and obeyed the law.

He added: “Many need help, many are perplexed, so we persuaded the European Commission’s office in London to fund the services of one of the country’s top migration and citizenship lawyers for an advice session free of charge.”

Mr Davies is a part-time immigration judge since 2006 and is a former chair of INQUEST. That charity provides expertise on state-related deaths and their investigation to bereaved people, lawyers, advice and support agencies.
