AN OXFORD MP has called for Britain to recognise the state of Palestine, following widespread violence in Gaza.
Oxford West and Abindon MP Layla Moran - who is the first British parliamentarian of Palestinian descent - said that hope 'had died' this week - but that Britain could resurrect it.
There has been international condemnation of Israel following clashes in Gaza, which led to the deaths of 59 Palestinians yesterday.
The violence - which also saw thousands injured - came after the USA's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and open an embassy in the city.
Ms Moran said: "In between Hamas and a very extreme Israeli prime minister, we have the blood of children.
"The two sides are not meeting as equals among whatever peace process table."

She asked the government if now was the moment to give the Palestinians recognition 'so that we have hope, because that is what has died this week'.
Ms Moran held her head in her hand and was comforted by Green party leader and fellow MP Caroline Lucas when foreign office minister Alistair Burt replied: "Recognition to the Palestinian state remains open at a time when it is best designed to serve the cause of peace and that will remain the UK's position."
There are fears that violence could return today, when Palestinians bury their dead.
