OXFORDSHIRE golfer Eddie Pepperell will be using a tournament viewed by millions around the world to raise awareness for Helen & Douglas House.

The 27-year-old from Sutton Courtenay won his maiden European Tour event earlier this year and plans to put his success towards a good cause following a visit to the charity.

In a tweet that has received more than 1,500 likes, he wrote: "I’ve decided that during the BMW PGA at Wentworth, and the Italian Open, rather than wear a blank cap, I’m going to be wearing the charity logo of Helen and Douglas House."

The BMW PGA Championship, which will take place from May 22 to 27 May in Wentworth, is one of the most important tournaments on the European Tour.

With a total prize purse of $7million, the prestigious tournament forms the opening leg of the Rolex Series and will feature top golfers including Rory McIlroy.

The Abingdon golfing star has also set up a Just Giving page which has already raised almost £6,000 for the hospice, which announced earlier this year it would have to close part of its operation due to funding problems.

Explaining his reasons for highlighting the work of the East Oxford charity on the page he wrote: "Helen & Douglas House was an obvious choice for me, as it’s a local charity, and they look after children and young adults.

"I found visiting the House fascinating. Having had an entirely healthy childhood, and having never suffered any painful personal losses in my life, my eyes were opened to some of the truly fantastic, and generous care that it out there for people who need it most."
