ISLAM and its influence in Oxfordshire was discussed by dignitaries and faith leaders at a city summit.

The newly-appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire joined the director of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Dr Farhan Nizami, at the Marston Road centre on Thursday.

The event was organised by the county's tourism board, Experience Oxfordshire.

It was introduced by the organisation's chair and former Oxfordshire County Council chief executive Joanna Simons.

A number of businesses supported the event which focused on promoting the county's cultural sector.

High Sheriff, Richard Venables, said: "This was a unique opportunity to learn more about the origins of the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies and the long established link of Islamic academia at Oxford University.

"The Islamic world is rich with culture and arts.

"We also learnt about the fast pace of cultural change in countries such as Saudi Arabia and the important research that is being carried out in the UK about factors affecting British Muslim communities."
