MUSICIANS are to perform a concert in memory of a much-loved Oxfordshire violinist.

On Sunday, April 22, at 7.30pm musicians will come together from across Oxfordshire, Devon, and France to perform in celebration of the life of violinist and teacher Elisabeth Reed, who died last year.

The memorial concert will be held at Magdalen College School Hall in East Oxford.

All proceeds will go to the charity Cancer Research UK.

Coral Lancaster, a cellist who played music with Ms Reed over a number of years, is organising the concert.

She said: “There are more than 20 Oxfordshire musicians involved and all proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK.

“Beth was part of the musical life of this city and much-loved by local performers and all her pupils.

“I played with Beth Reed over several years in the Lyric Piano Trio and in other local ensembles.”

Ms Lancaster said Ms Reed was a ‘much-loved teacher and performer’ who contributed to the musical life of Oxford over many years. Ms Reed passed away in December after a short illness.

Born in the United States, she played first violin in the San Antonio Symphony and the Het Gleders Orkest, before moving to the UK.

Ms Reed lived in Oxford for more than 20 years and her freelance work included performing with Corona Strings, the Lyric Piano Trio, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oxford Symphony Orchestra, and the string quartet Serenata.

As a teacher Ms Reed was very active in encouraging young violinists around the city, teaching for many years at Headington School.

She also had many private pupils.

The programme for the memorial concert will include favourites for string orchestra, including Elgar’s Serenade and Holst’s St Paul’s Suite.

There will be a selection of chamber music pieces which were loved by Ms Reed, including Dvorak’s piano quintet in A, Schumann’s piano trio in F, folk music arranged by the Danish String Quartet for the album Woodworks, and the Beatitudes by Martynov.

Tickets are not needed but donations will be invited for Cancer Research UK.
